HILLSBORO, Ore. - It has been nearly a week since a two-handed gunman fired into traffic at a Hillsboro intersection, shot a bystander and was gunned down in a shootout with police after a chase into Cornelius.
On Thanksgiving Day, the Washington County Sheriff's Office identified the sheriff's deputy and two police officers involved in the shooter's death. All are on paid administrative leave.
Involved in the shooting are:
- Washington County Deputy Daniel Charter, with the Sheriff's Office for 10 years. He is 49 years old.
- Cornelius Police Officer Bill Russell, with the Cornelius Police Department for 19 years. He is 54 years old.
- Cornelius Police Officer Craig Wellhouser, with the Cornelius Police Department for four years. He has five previous years of law enforcement experience, and is 35 years old.
The gunman, Shawn Schumacher, injured bystander Danny LeGore at that Hillsboro intersection. LeGore died a short time later.
"The suspect crashed his car and then exited his vehicle, immediately opening fire on a Washington County Sheriff's Deputy and two Cornelius Police Officers," according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office prepared statement released Thursday. "The law enforcement personnel fired back and killed Mr. Schumacher."
