Albany Police Captain leaves to be with son who was injured in Iraq

ALBANY, Ore. - The Albany Police Department will be short a Captain after an attack in Baghdad on Friday.

Thursday was Captain Ben Atchley's last day of work. He is taking a leave of absence to help his son.

The Police Captain's life completely changed on Friday night when he got a call from the Army saying his 23-year-old son, Corporal Joshua Atchley, had been injured.

An improvised explosive device hit Corporal Atchley's hummer and the vehicle was fired upon by insurgents.

"Probably the hardest thing is as his family contact I had to go tell his mother in Corvallis, tell the grandparents," Atchley said.

His son lost his left eye, has shrapnel injuries to his right leg and his right arm was shattered.

The former South Albany High School student has already undergone four surgeries in Germany.

Joshua Atchley is expected to arrive at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio by Friday night. His father plans to be there and stay until his son has recovered from his major injuries.

Corporal Atchley was five months into his second tour of duty in Iraq. He is part of the First Infantry Division out of Fort Riley in Kansas.

Once he has fully recovered he is expected to move back home to Albany.
