Deputy Kent Mundell
TACOMA, Wash. – Police officials have invited citizens to line the route of a motorcade that will be bringing the body of Deputy Kent Mundell back to Tacoma this afternoon.

Those who want to show their respects will be able to watch the motorcade as it leaves Interstate 5 at the Seventh Street exit, proceeds onto South Tacoma Way, goes right on Steilacoom Boulevard to the Mountain View Funeral Home.

The motorcade is scheduled to leave the King County Medical Examiner's Office at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

A small contingency of Seattle Police Department and Washington State Patrol cars will escort five Pierce County Sheriff's vehicles.

Mundell died at Harborview Medical Center on Monday evening, a week after he was shot during a domestic disturbance at an Eatonville home.

Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor said the whole department has been shaken by the loss.

"He lost his life because he believed in taking risks for other people. All of us here... have suffered a tremendous loss.

"Whether or not you knew him, whether or not you lived in Pierce County, you suffered a tremendous loss," Pastor said. "We should all be thankful there are people willing to step forward, willing to put themselves at risk for us."

A public memorial has been scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 5 at the Tacoma Dome. The exact time and details of an expected memorial procession have not been finalized.

On Monday night, dozens of people gathered outside the sheriff's office South Hill precinct to pay their respects to the fallen deputy.

Another public vigil is planned for 8 p.m. Tuesday at the same location.
