"I was never treated like a hostage," said Shane Runyon. "I was in there because he is my friend."
Runyon was released 12 hours after the standoff began and was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
The incident began Wednesday morning when police tried to arrest Hastings for reportedly jumping bail. He would not surrender and instead fired shots, according to police.
"He didn't want to go back to Clark County Jail," said Runyon.
Runyon said Hastings locked the door to a bedroom and started shooting two hours later when police stormed the house.
Runyon said he does not know who fired first. He said he hid in the bathroom and a bullet caught him.
Another bullet hit Cpl. Chris LeBlanc in the armpit, sending the officer to the hospital.
"Matt didn't mean to shoot the cop," said Runyon. "After he found out the cop got shot, he got sad. He knew he was going to be in trouble for a long time."
For the next nine hours, Runyon said he and Hastings did some drugs.
"To calm me down, smoked a little meth," he said.
He said Hastings, who is said to be schizophrenic, turned extremely suicidal.
"He asked me if I'd shoot him," Runyon said.
Runyon refused and eventually left the home and was taken to the hospital.
Eight hours later, Hastings finally surrendered after police used tear gas. Despite everything, Runyon said he does not hold a grudge.
"I'm not mad at him," he said. "He was just asking for help man. Just wants help for meth and to get a straight life. He wants to be a good person."
As for reports about Runyon's drug use, he said he has been clean and sober for quite some time and only did meth during the standoff to ease the pain from the gunshot wound.
