FBI to investigate Aaron Campbell shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. - The FBI will begin an investigation into the fatal police shooting of Aaron Campbell last January, according to a letter sent to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The request for an investigation came from Portland City Commissioner Dan Saltzman.

U.S. Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich said in the letter that “if the evidence shows that there is a prosecutable violation of any federal criminal civil rights statutes, appropriate action will be taken.”

A distraught Campbell was unarmed when shot in the back by Portland Police Officer Ron Frashour on Jan. 29.  Frashour said he believed Campbell was reaching for a weapon. A grand jury cleared Frashour of any wrongdoing.
