Deputy fatally shoots armed man in traffic stop
DAMASCUS, Ore. - Gunfire erupted during a routine traffic stop along Highway 212 Tuesday evening, leaving one man dead.
The incident began around 8:30 p.m. on Highway 212 at Southeast Foster Road when a Clackamas County sheriff's deputy stopped a minivan because it was missing a front license plate.
According to police, the deputy asked the man in the vehicle for his license and registration. The man handed over the paperwork as requested but then pulled out a revolver.
The officer ordered the man to put down the gun, and an exchange of gunfire ensued when the man refused to cooperate and the deputy began to fear for his life. The deputy was not injured, but the driver of the minivan was killed.
The sheriff's office identified the man killed as Shawn Devo Mosley, 48, whose last known address was in Milwaukie.
The officer who fatally shot Mosley was identified as Robert Nashif, 34, an 8-year veteran of the department. He was placed on paid administrative leave following the shooting, as is customary in such incidents.
The sheriff's office said Mosley had a warrant for a probation violation on a public indecency charge out of Clackamas County.
Witnesses said they heard multiple shots and when investigators arrived, they were seen placing evidence markers at several locations where shell casings were found. Police said the driver fired off at least one round.
Police are now trying to sort out the details surrounding the shooting. What they do know at this point is that the minivan was not stolen and is registered to a man in Christmas Valley, Oregon.
