After violent attack, woman advocates self-protection with guns
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ore. - Rachel Lucas suffered for years from panic attacks after she was violently sexually assaulted by a stranger, but in 2009 she got her concealed handgun license.
"It was never something I thought about for myself ever, until my daughter suggested it," she says.
Underneath her pant leg is a small gun holstered around her ankle.
"This is a .22; it's a small one, a Beretta Bobcat," she says.
The training she's learned from shooting guns has made a big difference.
Now Lucas is reaching out to other crime victims through her new nonprofit, Safer Oregon, where the focus is promoting self-protection.
They'll do that through legislation, concealed handgun licenses and firearms for self-defense.
"Point women in direction of programs like Refuse to be a Victim and other programs where they can learn to protect themselves with firearms," because, she says, it's about quality of life, especially for victims who have been through so much.
"It's how you feel every moment of your life, that you feel you can protect yourself," she says.
Lucas says there are advocates for gun rights, and then there are advocates for crime victims' rights, but she hasn't found any that do both.
She says it's not just about victims but also their family members, or any Oregonians looking to protect themselves from becoming a victim.
Multiple studies have found that owning a gun does not mean you're safer.
In 2010, the "Southern Medical Journal" found a gun is 12 times more likely to result in the death of a household member or guest than in the death of an intruder. And Harvard professor David Hemenway, who's written a book about gun violence, says having a gun at home increases the risk of suicide in that household by two to four times.
Yet some people want to take your weapons and rights away:

Everyone should contact their reps and tell them to vote no on HB 3200
IMO the sponsors of that vile bill should immediately be removed from office and charged with treason.And remember those names...
I support her decision, and appreciate the fact that she received training in the use of the gun.

@feral Dogs are dangerous and only animal control people and professional handlers should walk them. If the neighbor's rottweiler jumps over the fence and rips the face off of some kid at the day care across the street, it's much safer to wait for police.
You should go teach personal defense classes. You sound like a real expert.

@feral @Playanekes Well, that's kinda fun! We should go shooting sometime.
Good for her!
Cool so the lady who had a gun and her ex was trying to kill her and she had a order of no contact on him -while holding her 1 month old fired 1 warning shot into the roof was sent to 10 years in jail for attempted murder.
Why??
Where did that happen?
My guess would be that it didn't happen.

@feral@Sundowner@Pers RetireeYou just need better medication. Bur remember:
"Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: depression, anxiety, aggression, agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts, hallucinations, memory problems, changes in personality, risk-taking behavior, decreased inhibitions, no fear of danger, or thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself."Â Â Â -Ambien

@feral @Pers Retiree HA!!
Great job, when the Police just canât get there in time, then it is time to protect yourself. On that note I am kinda like that hot sauce commercial, but I would be saying .357 I put that *&$% on everything!
Forgot to add, THANK YOU, Ms. Lucas, for founding your group and speaking out, and arming yourself!

Oh reeeeaaaalllly?? I grew up in Texas, guns were everywhere, and knew or heard of NO ONE who died from a gun in their home. I realized when I was a kid that "the authorities" were lying about these stats.Â
Oh yeah, forgot to add: I did save my life with a gun!! Wheeee!!
Fair enough - they've done research and you "just know".
@pork chop They need to recall the guns that shoot on their own.
@pork chop Then apparently growing up in Texas (or any other state), you never heard of anyone who committed suicide.
@Sundowner @pork chop First suicide I heard of was someone driving their car into a bridge abutment (sp?), dead sober!
@pork chopThe Portland one isn't a founding father, he's a founding mother.
@Max Quinn @pork chop Nor less, do you agree yes or no.  I have never met a lawyer yet who could just say yes or no because they love to hear themselves talk.
@pork chop @Max Quinn
The Jefferson quote is fake:Â http://www.monticello.org/site/jefferson/strongest-reason-people-to-retain-right-to-keep-and-bear-arms-quotation
The Adams quote checks out but is incomplete:Â
"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press, or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; or to raise standing armies, unless necessary for the defense of the United States, or of some one or more of them; or to prevent the people from petitioning, in a peaceable and orderly manner, the federal legislature, for a redress of grievances; or to subject the people to unreasonable searches and seizures of their persons, papers or possessions."
He's basically reciting the Bill of Rights, so the keeping of arms is part of the liberties protected by the Constitution, no more important than the others listed.
@pork chop Very true that people will find a way.  But I'll maintain until the end that it takes some serious brass to off oneself.  While others may look at the act as selfish since those left behind are hurting, the act itself is not an act of cowardice, it's the final act in a desperate, debilitating effort to end the pain.  Â
@Max Quinn Gonna have to research this one, if I have the time.Â
In the meantime, how about these instead, then:Â
"No man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." ~~Thomas Jefferson
"The said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press, or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms." ~~Samuel Adams (the original Founding Father one, not the Portland one)
@pork chop @Sundowner Nope.Â
That quote is from a letter he wrote in 1755 as a member of the Pennsylvania legislature. It has nothing to do with guns or individual liberties.
The legislature wanted to build border forts to protect against Native Americans. To pay for it, they wanted to tax the land of the Penn family. The governor said no, the Penn's did not want to be taxed. Instead, they offered to donate some money for the forts.
Franklin objected because he thought that the legislature, on behalf of the people, had a right to impose a tax. So the essential liberty is the right to impose a tax. The "purchase a little temporary safety" is literal - the legislature would have given up its right to impose a tax in exchange for some funds to purchase some forts. Nothing to do with individuals opposing tyranny.
@Sundowner QUOTE: "Anyone who ever tries to tell you that those who commit suicide are cowards is either lying or knows nothing about the depths of clinical depression."Â
** Unfortunately, I do know exactly what you're talking about! And people will find a way, gun or no.Â
Possible suicides don't negate our right to bear arms. As ol' Ben Franklin said so well: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759@pork chop First one where I actually knew the woman was with a shotgun blast to the head.  She was only 4'11", had to take off her shoe and use her toe to fire the gun, leaving behind two young toddlers.  Anyone who ever tries to tell you that those who commit suicide are cowards is either lying or knows nothing about the depths of clinical depression.  It takes some brass to take the final step in putting an end to existing in a black hole.
Well I just read the "studies" from 2010 in the "Southern Medical Journal," as I suspected none were written by anyone with a research PhD. All were written by M.D.'s and R.N.'s, they are not trained researchers. Interestingly, a Feb. 2013 paper published in the "Southern Medical Journal," written by a PhD holding researcher found opposite results. From an ER study, and I quote, "Results: Subjects with violence-related injuries did not have a higher rate of accessibility to guns." "Conclusions: There was no difference between the two subject groups in terms of their being victims of violence and the rate of gun accessibility." Isn't it stange that legitimate research done by the same journal shows the opposite results to the anecdotal "study" done by medical doctors and nurses.
So if a researcher has a PhD, then what they say must be true? Why does nobody believe them when they say man made global warming is real? Or are we supposed to just pick and choose who we believe depending on our agenda?
@Oregon7812 No, one should always be skeptical, but M.D.'s and R.N.'s are not trained in research methodology. The pieces in the SMJ, and I read them, seemed more of opinion pieces looking for justification for their preconceived ideas.
BTW, most people do accept the idea of man made global warming, even though it might not have significant effects yet. But I think that was a bad choice of analogy on your part.
I don't have a problem with people having guns, but I personally wouldn't want one, if I felt I needed something for protection, I would just have pepper spray or something.
@GladiOla That is perfectly reasonable. Make sure your municipality allows you to carry these things concealed, and remember an important axiom:
If you knew you were going to need a weapon, you most likely wouldn't have gone there at all.
@Playanekes @GladiOla AND, make sure you know where the spray is, and most importantly, know how to quickly and efficiently retrieve it in a variety of scenario's.
Case in point, I occasionally ask my wife where her's is. She responds in my purse, I then ask her to retrieve it as I move towards her. Of course, long after I'm standing directly in front of her, she's still fishing for it in that bottomless thing called a purse.
@Playanekes @diogenes @jtesla -- Woo hoo!  Look at that!  You admitted (yeah, like no one knew) that you're the person who cut-and-pasted his comments and in essence turned him in to his supervisors.  What a wimpy, classless, thin-skinned joke you are.  And it hasn't been me the last couple of hours who keeps on commenting....that would be YOU to me.  Poor punkin' got his feelers hurt this morning.  Makes me proud.
@Sundowner @Playanekes At least I don't lie about you. Like this:
Hey, didn't you say you abandoned the NRA recently? Didn't you get some guy "booted" off the forum? Didn't you report him to his security guards and get him in trouble with the VA office?  You don't believe in background checks, blahdeblahblahblah.
Admit it, psycho. Yew Can't Qwit Me.
Creepy
You've got nothing, huh? I never said anything about background checks and so instead you're accusing me of "banning" Fed up Fed and all kinds of other total nonsense. Admit it, stalker.
@Sundowner @Social Glimpse Also, YOU LIAR:
How would one go about "getting Fed up Fed banned" on here? Hmm? How would I have done that, you twisted little psychopath.
FFS, woman. You're out of your mind.
@Sundowner @Social Glimpse @Playanekes LOL!!
Now you're making up even MORE nonsense, you pathological liar. He lied about private armed security, so I verified with THE SECURITY, but, listen here you lying scum:
HOW WOULD THEY HAVE KNOWN WHICH EMPLOYEE WAS FED UP FED, YOU FREAKIN' LIAR?!!! Â
@Sundowner @Playanekes   Yeah, but, I keep demonstrating that you're a liar. You say things about me that aren't true and then call me a joke, you stupid, stupid woman.  You can't even stalk me properly, silly cow.
@Social Glimpse @Sundowner @Playanekes I'm not southern. I was born and raised in Portland but lived in Mississippi for awhile.
Your inaccuracies are as pathetic and pointless as your repeated attempts to tarnish my character simply because you have nothing else to contribute.
@Social Glimpse @Playanekes I can't recall if it was Playa who got fed up banned on here...whoever it was forwarded comments to his employer trying to get him fired from his job at the VA, I think because fed up made a comment regarding rent-a-cops.  Playa doesn't take well to it when people point out his......double speak.Â
@Playanekes http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/media-center/pr006-12.shtml.  Granted, this is an anti-gun group, I'm only linking it because of the tie-in to Frank Luntz's survey.  He's NOT exactly a leftie.  As for "WTF is WRONG" with me, you just rub me the wrong way, I guess.  You're a Negative Ned and you're a name-caller.  Trollish but a long-winded one.
@Sundowner @Playanekes latest poll on cnn hit something like 93% favor background checks, then this ol' miss southern boys{playanekes} start drooling their drawl, and when challenged prove their fringe, he just needs mo' beer, for his swamp bug infested world.
@Playanekes Nothing's wrong with me calling you a joke.  Just calling things like I see them.
@Sundowner@Playanekes "And since over 75%% of NRA"
 We just demonstrated that you have a credibility problem, and you admitted to it.
The funny thing is, I HAVEN'T SAID ANYTHING ABOUT UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS ONE WAY OR ANOTHER and here you, again, are calling me "fringe" and spouting MORE BULLS__T THAT I NEVER SAID.
And then you're insulting me by calling ME a joke. WTF is WRONG with you?
@Playanekes You're such a joke.  I've always supported a person's right to own any kind of gun that is currently legal to own.  What I advocate for is universal background checks and an increase in funding for mental health programs.  If you want to call that political rhetoric, have at it.  And since over 75% of NRA members are also calling for universal background checks, where does that leave you?  In the fringe.  When laws are changed because far-right extremists won't compromise, let us know how that works out, k?
@Sundowner @NotAChance @Playanekes @GladiOla You'd bore them to death with political rhetoric, internet statistics and false quotes. Let us know how that works out.
@NotAChance @Playanekes @GladiOla At OSU I watched Project Safe Run demonstrate how long it took for a woman to fish pepper spray out of her coat or purse after perceiving that she was about to be attacked.  Then, in contrast, they demonstrated the dogs. Dude, that was chilling. I'm allergic to dogs, but, damn.
@NotAChance @Playanekes @GladiOla I'd wear mine around my neck on a lanyard but it would be sooo heavy.  Oh, wait -- you're talking about pepper spray, not a gun.  =)
