No spill following barge accident in the Columbia River
SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says no pollution resulted from a barge accident in the Columbia River early Friday.
A barge carrying 1.8 million gallons of diesel fuel struck the walls of a lock approach to The Dalles Dam and not a submerged object as originally believed. The Coast Guard says there are no reports of a hazard to navigation in the Columbia River.
The double-bottom barge Tri-City Voyager was being pushed by the tug Defiance.
After the accident, the tug and barge continued north, through the locks and safely moored at the upper basin north wall. Lock operators told the Coast Guard that they didn't smell diesel fuel and saw no visible pollution.

Phew! Â I'm glad that polluted river didn't get more polluted
North is top of page on map. Look at dam on Google map or paper map to see.
Lock operator to coast guard:Â I didn't smell alcohol, um diesel, on his breath.
North? Which way is north in the Columbia River at The Dalles?
@7Ws "Which way is north in the Columbia River at The Dalles?"Â That would be in the direction of the State of Washington.
@7Ws The adjustment dial on their compass got turned 90 degrees but doubtful. Ever drive on a highway with newer car that has built in compass? Or set up a compass......it will not always read same as highway signs....interstate 5 North for instance....u will be headed nw and ne a lot maybe even west or east at times.
@7Ws Uhmmmm . . . Boy, you ask the hard ones first, don'tchya?  I'm going to quote something from the article and see if it helps both of us understand, okay?  Here goes:

"After the accident, the tug and barge continued north, through the locks and safely moored at the upper basin north wall."

If I remember correctly from the tour my 8th grade class took there back in 19(mumble and tosh) some years ago, because of the angles of the dam (it doesn't do a simple straight line across the river, but has a couple of 90 degree angles), the lock isn't situated east and west. Â Get it?
@Gravity Works!  @7Ws Let me guess? From your smarta$$ answer, you sat pretty close to the teacher during that 8th grade tour.
