PORTLAND, Ore. -- Mayor Charlie Hales has proclaimed December as Be a Santa to a Senior month in Portland.
Hales read the proclamation before Wednesday's city council meeting got underway. It means a lot to some local volunteers who work to wrap and deliver presents to the elderly who are homebound.
The program is run by a local senior care company which works with certain stores in our area to collect the gifts purchased by the public. Requests are placed on ornaments on a tree and then the purchased gifts are later picked up by volunteers.
The gifts are wrapped and delivered by Meals on Wheels before Christmas. The program is designed to bring gifts to seniors in our community who otherwise might not get a present this year.
