Bike theft turns to dose of office kindness for Portland woman

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Surveillance video captured someone taking off with Miranda Tompkins’ bike outside a northwest Portland law office.
The theft was especially wrenching for the Portland woman because the bike was her only mode of transportation.
But what started as a sad situation turned into a happy ending as her coworkers rallied to replace Tompkins’ bicycle.
It started when Tompkins, a receptionist at Perkins Coie law firm, said the bicycle was stolen from in front of the firm’s building. Tompkins watched video of the theft over and over in hopes of tracking down who perpetuated the crime.
“Seeing someone just come up and snatch it like it was his own was frustrating to watch,” she said. “I wanted to chase him down if I could.”
In the months since the theft, Tompkins hasn’t gotten her bicycle back. But she did get a surprise from her coworkers.
Doug Pahl, a partner at the law firm, organized an office effort to buy Tompkins a new bike.
“This is a place that supports its people and she needed some support,” Pahl said.
He sent out an email to every partner. Less than a week later, thanks to all the money collected, Tompkins had her new ride.
In fact, the law partners collected more than enough money for the bike itself, so they also bought her riding accessories, including a heavy duty bike lock.
“I felt like it meant that everyone cared about me on a more personal level than just working with me,” Tompkins said. “They knew how broken up I was over the loss of that bike and to have them replace it within less than a week made me feel like they knew me and what was important to me. And the generosity was overwhelming.”
She’s still hoping someone will recognize the bike thief.
Nice scam.
Nice law firm, one I would want to do business with in the future, I put their name in my rollo dex..
bike thieves should be burned alive
Don't ever leave your bike alone for even a minute without a good sturdy U-Lock on it. Â Don't cheap out on the U-Lock - get a good heavy one. Â Leave it at work if you don't want to haul it with you. Â
It's also a good idea to buy another 3 foot steel cable to run through your wheels (and lock it with the U-Haul). Â Try driving through Old Town early in the morning and you'll see bare bicycle frames locked up to bike racks.
@UtterReality where do i go to find me a u lock for my bike
Thieves should be executed on the spot.
Lost my bike a few weeks ago. Stolen right out of the garage in my back yard.
If I ever catch these bastards in the act(or afterwards with my stolen property in their greasy little palms), it ain't gonna be a pretty sight.
@mine9Â So bike theft warrants execution? Â OK then......they don't even resort to that in the Middle East, do they? Â
@Sundowner No, over there you get killed for being a woman.
@mine9Â Then it sounds like it's time to scratch "Visit the Middle East" off my bucket list. Â Crap -- I've either done or given up on all the fun stuff that was on the list.
@mine9 well, if they cut their left hand off when they steal something, Im pretty sure they will think twice before snatching something that isnt theirs.
@BeaverTONEÂ @mine9Â Are you enjoying my country? Â When do you go back to the Middle East?
@mine9 @Fake Pilot In America?  Nope.
@Fake Pilot Worried about your hands?
white people are so good to one another.....nice to hear she got her bike back.
@BeaverTONE racist!
@Phuzz God is the biggest racist of all - look how he treated the Egyptians!
Yeah, good for her , thank you nice people to help her , I hope the thief dies from a dirty needle.Â
@Richard Goezinyah Let me guess, atheist?
@Fake Pilot @Richard Goezinyah No I believe in god and not just the one on my money. How does that comment make me an atheist?Â
@Fake Pilot @Richard Goezinyah Well if he dies from a dirty needle it will be gods will. I just wanted god to consider it.
@Richard Goezinyah @Fake Pilot Unchristian.
Even with all the bad in the world the generosity of the average American never ceases to amaze me.
I once ran out of gas and a total stranger went and got me gas on their own, even though I didn't have any cash on me.  When I told them that I would drive to their house to repay them the woman just said, 'Don't worry about it". Â
We may have our faults but we are IMO, a very generous country. Â Makes me proud to be American.
@From the OCÂ ~ Â Yes, we are generous people (well, most of us anyway)... and I'm still prod to claim American citizenship, too..! Â :-)
Thanks for running this story, KATU - we need more like this..! Â
Get a bicycle monkey......duh!
@oops where at a hardware store i don,t know could someone tell me where
Nice, all slams. slurs and lawyer jokes aside, a good happy ending.
Nice U lock, the only way to go.  A hideaway 18" bolt cutter is not snapping that baby.
Cheers,
I will be on the lookout for the guy who stole your bike. Oh wait, they didn't post the video. Guess I won't be on the look out.
@RalphCramden Looking out your retirement home window, it isn't likely you'll spot it, but thanks for your concern. Â
Way to go Perkins Cole...... nothing like a little self promotion when doing a good deed.Â
Make sure you register your bike with the PPB, so they have the serial number on file if this one gets stolen.Â
Nicely done, boss! Way to watch out for your people in your office. =)
Was the bike locked up in the first place? Â I haven't read that part.
@Tellitlikeitizz Yes. The thief cut the cable lock. They bought her a u-lock.
@Tellitlikeitizz  Does it REALLY matter? Fact is, stupid crimiinal thinks he is entitled to things that are not his. Hope he gets run down by the crime train while riding his ill-gotten bike.
@wondering @Tellitlikeitizz I agree with that, and I'd like to be driving the train. However, lets face it, bikes get stolen, and common sense says get a lock.Â
Good for them.  It might just change my perception of lawyers.........nah.  But well done anyhow Perkins Coie law firm.
Hmm... Do you think maybe they just wanted her to stop wasting company time watching that video over and over again, so they ponied up the cash to get her back to work? In a busy law firm like that every minute is money either earned or wasted.
@sargeratorsucksdonkeys My sister works in a law office. They spend alot of time playing Farmville.
@Tellitlikeitizz @sargeratorsucksdonkeys thats so funny
Good employees, bad city...courtesy of a bad government, and hence bad electorate........sad.
@TimBurr You realize this story is about someone having their bike stolen, right?  Amazingly enough, that happens everywhere.....but nice attempt to slam everyone and everything about Portland.  Maybe you'll like this site better -- you can REALLY get your hate on there:  http://www.bakersfieldnow.com/  Buh bye, gonna miss you.
Her only mode of transportation? Is she too good for trimet and cannot walk?
@tally 1. She bikes 18 miles round trip. 2. Biking > Trimet
@24601 @tally cabs
@wondering @tally Give her a travel expense, she is working for lawyers
@tally   cabs = big $$$
"Sheâs still hoping someone will recognize the bike thief."
If you're going to include that in the article, at least post a picture of the thief.
@JGaltÂ
They will post the information after the news airs tonight. It will include the video and the interview. That is how they work.
