Bomb squad opens cooler at OSU, finds stolen scientific instruments

CORVALLIS, Ore. - A bomb squad investigated a big cooler left in a parking lot at Oregon State University on Wednesday morning - and found scientific instrument stolen three days ago inside.

An OSU employee alerted state police at 5:47 a.m. after finding the suspicious container in a parking lot south of the Kerr Administration building.

State troopers couldn't find an owner, so they cordoned off the area and call in the bomb squad.

The squad closed 15th Street to the public from Jefferson Street to Washington Street as a safety precaution and used a robot to examine the container.

Inside they found equipment stolen May 19 from the OSU College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, including marine data collection device and cable.

Crews reopened the road just after 8 a.m.
