Candle blamed for NE Portland apartment fire

PORTLAND, Ore. – Firefighters said an unattended candle started a fire in a Northeast Portland apartment Saturday morning.
No one was home when the fire started. It caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.
It happened at the Dekum Court Apartments, located at 7017 NE 27th Ave. An apartment on the second floor was filling up with smoke when crews arrived. Neighbors evacuated the building.
Firefighters said a neighbor heard a smoke alarm and called 9-1-1.
“We could hear alarms before we could smell anything burning,” the neighbor said.
Candles were OK when your home was your castle and was made of stone! Guess what, it ain't, and your home now burns really well! Get a life, and forget candles, unless you can keep an eye on them!

People never learn.
Â
Year after year this very same thing happens and time and again we read the same thing in the news.
Â
An unguarded open flame in a dwelling is an invitation to death and/or destruction.
Another reason why i refuse to live in an attached unit. Â Someone else's laziness could end up destroying my home or killing my family.
Â
Apartments really aren't a good place to live anyways. Â People stacked up on top of each other, overpriced, hardly any privacy, tenants tend to be moody and miserable making for terrible neighbors. Â Rarely do I ever see a CLEAN apartment complex. Â They always leave a mess for the rest of the neighborhood to always clean up.
@Silver Surfer we have a  fairly clean one! Some people cannot afford to rent an house, let alone buy one. So apartments it is... A complex is often only as good as it's landlords, for whom they rent to and how they take care of the property. If you live near undesirable ones, a call or two to the relevant city depts. can do wonders to kick landlords butts in gear. 99% of the time any apt. problems ALWAYS come back to could-care-less land(slum) lords. The one good thing about apts. over house ownership is that if you get bad neighbors, it's always way easier  to move away from the problem.
