EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Freight train traffic has resumed on a stretch of rail south of Everett, Washington, that was hit by a mudslide that derailed a freight train. The slide and derailment was caught on cell-phone video.
A fresh mudslide has extended a moratorium on passenger train traffic in the area.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says freight traffic restarted late Tuesday afternoon after crews worked through the night to rerail one of the derailed freight cars.
Melonas says another slide hit shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday in the same area.
That means a 48-hour safety moratorium for Amtrak and Sound Transit Sounder passenger trains has been extended until Thursday morning. The moratorium affects passenger train traffic between Seattle and Everett.
The spokesman says the other six cars derailed in Monday afternoon's mudslide will be removed over the next three weeks.
that's not a "mud slid"; it's mass wasting. maybe they shouldn't have cut that slope so steep or cut all the trees off the hill?
Thank goodness it wasn't a passenger train that got hit and no one was hurt. It's amazing to watch the tremendous force of a considerably small slide. Amazing video.Â
@DeaconBugg "Thank goodness it wasn't a passenger train."
Â
Wow...no kidding, right? Merry Christmas, Amtrak.
I saw that on the news last night, HOLY SMOKES!!!
AMAZING video of the slide by the longshoreman who knew what was going to happen.Â
Man soemthing was working over time, that car came close to that power pole...
Actually, FRED doesn't mean "Flashing Rear End Device". Â When the railroads did away with the caboose and the crew members who road in them, lost their jobs, the railroads replaced them with this device. Â The railroad crews, not too happy with losing their jobs, nicknamed the device, "F...ing" Rear End Device". Â Of course, the real terminology would be bleeped by KATU. Â The real name of it is "End of Train" device. Â Â
@boomer Eh Yes I know about BNSF..Better Not start a Familiy I know the other "F" word but.. that would be bleeped. While working for Crew Shuttle Services. I had to transport a few of the things there not light. Thank God I quit before the major accident that happened that put that business out or business. .
@lee986321  @boomer That's an interesting detail about you, Lee. Thanks for sharing!
@boomer When I was in the Coast Guard, fred stood for "Fing rediculas electronic device" lol
@Dale Quakenbush  @boomer We still use a caboose in this area from time to time. What really is interesting is when the run the train that says "For Fire Use Only" at any rate I can imagine these tracks will be undergoing alignment checks and such since this set is used to transport people as well. I am just thankful it was not a passenger train. I wonder if the rail road crew will need a copy of that video for there insurance?
Just goes to show even small landslides are no joke! Glad no one was injured!
I could just imagine the engineer thoughts when his computer signals it has lost FRED. thank heavens it didn't slide as the engines where passing by, that could have killed the engineers on board. oh for those that may not know "FRED" is "Flashing Rear End Device" It is used for monitoring air pressure and well.. Derailment. it is basically the modern day caboose.
That is a pretty small landslide but it tosses that train around like it's a toy.
