Chip Kelly's Eugene real estate is really big

EUGENE, Ore. — Chip Kelly's gone. But, Duck fans, console yourselves. He's left a big piece of himself behind.
To be precise, the 6,300-square-foot house he recently built on a half-acre double lot off Gilham Road in northeast Eugene.
The city of Eugene issued the occupancy permit for the giant house barely a year ago.
In a neighborhood of new, supersize executive homes, Kelly's pad stands out as extra-supersize.
Not satisfied with a standard lot in the high-end subdivision along Creekside Way, the University of Oregon head football coach bought two lots for his house.
The two-story residence sports 6,281 square feet of indoor living space, including six bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one half-bathroom, according to Lane County's property database. Plus, it has a 1,200-square-foot indoor basketball court, an 800-square-foot garage, an 849-square-foot in-ground outdoor swimming pool, and a 1,300-square-foot outdoor patio, according to the database.
Kelly took out a $1.2 million mortgage to build the place, according to the mortgage document filed with Lane County.
Lane County says the property has a market value of $1.1 million. Kelly's annual property tax bill last November was $15,045.
So, even if Kelly's moving to the East Coast, he'll still be giving a big financial helping hand to local government in Lane County as long as he owns the property.
Kelly could not be reached for comment via the Philadelphia Eagles about whether he plans to sell the home.
If he opts to sell in Lane County's lukewarm market, will he be able to recoup his outlay?
Kelly lost money on his first real estate transaction in Eugene.
Soon after moving here in early 2007 to take the job as the Ducks' offensive coordinator, Kelly in August 2007 paid $525,000 for a 2,500-square-foot house on Roanoke Avenue, off Crescent Avenue in northeast Eugene, according to a deed filed with Lane County. That was at the peak of Lane County's — and the nation's — real estate boom. Shortly thereafter, the local and national real estate markets began to collapse, bruising millions of homeowners.
Kelly managed to sell the Roanoke Avenue house for $450,000 last summer, according to a deed filed with Lane County.
I'm going to buy this home...But I'll need to rent out a few of the rooms share cost of everything.
Dibs on the master Bedroom...is there an inground pool? Heated? Hope so!
anyway, what a way to get free advertisement here....just make it a news story...maybe we should do same!
There's gotta be a way to get a house sold these days.
a very fancy house
what you people fail to realize is how iconic chip kelly is to not only oregon football, but collegiate football in the nation. he helped the ducks football program earn national acknowledgement. what may not be much to you, means a lot to a whole hell of a lot of people, players, alumni, football fans, oregonians. i think phil knight has more than enough pocket money to pay chips salary, you are crazy if you think it came from raised tuition. he earned that house, he lead some of the best seasons the ducks have had. we will miss you chip!
Couldn't have said it better. He put Oregon on the Map. He did earn that house.
I am not a Chip Kelly or Ducks fan, but he worked hard to become successful and I certainly don't begrudge him living in such a nice house and I'm surprised by some of the comments.  I am not buying into this "evil, greedy rich people" crap.  The only thing I question is where the money came from for his salary.  Was it the U of O charging students more in tuition/fees in order to pay millions to a college football coach, or does the money come from ticket and merchandise sales and from money brought in specifically by the football program. And what is PERS going to end up paying at retirement for his 5 year service as the coach, at the taxpayers expense.  I am more concerned about where the money for his salary comes from than how he spends it.  I would love to live in a beautiful house like that one day, maybe not quite that big, but that is just a personal preference, not an envious or  judgmental thing.
Whoa - his parents don't even live in the area. So it is not like single man Chip Kelly was needing five extra bedrooms for their usage on an ongoing basis or whatever.Â
Â
You woulda thunk he had a modest home somewhere near the campus - but no - he opted for this. THIS.Â
Whoa, Chip. I don't think I want to know much more about you - or the gross amounts of bonuses from Nike above the salary that the public university gifted you with - simply to coach the game of football for a few months out of the year.Â
@englishdaisy It takes the other 9 to prepare. Winning does not just happen out of thin air.Â
All I can say is - I don't want to clean up after a team meeting at that place!
Especially the bathrooms.
the old saying the rich get rich and the poor get poorer is very true. if he gets pers he sure will be able to afford his medical payments unlike a lot of retired people who are almost paying 50% of their retirement take home to medical payments. Â He won't even have to tap his life savings cause he will get so much a month from pers.
yep and I'm sure he was living with in his means too, unlike most welfare recipients
Like Oregonies, who gives a rip.
Â
The guy made his bucks, he has a right to his bucks.
Â
The Socialist atmosphere in Hippie-Dom is killing the state.
Â
Everyone is not the same. Oregonies, Chipper proved that.Â
@oczoxvii "Everyone is not the same. Oregonies, Chipper proved that." True that. Most would not fip-flop aftersaying they decided to stay. The least he could have done was give it a couple weeks before crapping on the kids that were happy when he claimed he was staying.
I did like Chip untill he lied for the money. He said "he had NO Plans on leaving Oregon", untill he was offered that High Paid Job Offer for the Eagles.
@cpt.iceman Are you telling me that if another employer came along and offered you much, much, much more than you're making right now that you wouldn't take the job? Even if you had just told co-workers that you weren't interested in leaving your current job? Remember - there was no press conference about him staying, no public announcement about him staying, no contract extension ------- only reports on what he told the AD.
A couple of points on both sides...
Â
Coaches get paid based on the value that they bring.. just like a movie star.
Â
Does Autzen Sell out games?? yes
Is Duck Gear making big $$ ?? yes
Is Oregon Football a big $$ game for ESPN rights?? yes
Â
Who lead that.. Chip did. Â Not saying English 101 prof's don't work hard.. but come on, who makes the school MILLIONS??? English or Duck Football??
Â
As far as Chip being the "most winning coach" ??? Ok??
Â
compared to who? Â Not compared to Bob Stoops.. or Pete Carroll or Tom Osborne or Barry Switzer or Les Miles... or anyone that has won a National Title and or coached a Heisman winner.Â
Â
Oregon will be relevant when they have title. Still none to this day. Â Â
Â
Â
@oregonweathersucks It's just so obscenely grotesque and over the top. One man living here. Deluding himself about being a capitalist ONE PERCENTER and all the wonderment money gives you.Â
Â
Off he goes - good luck with that, Chipster. Like all of those hypocritical progressives living all around him on the East Coast - he will fit right in.Â
@englishdaisy  @oregonweathersucks whatever.. if he made the $$ he can spend it how HE wants to.. not how the socialists want him to. Hate the game not the player... Same people on here bashing Chip for being successful and getting paid based on the value he added.. bashed Mitt and others too. Chip has a great skill set. Our country is great because there is the "dream" and you can make it happen; what sucks is.. people you don't work for or even know will judge you not on performance..but how you spend the salary for your outstanding performance. Who ever thought in America that being successful and wealthy would be a liability or something that would have to be defended. Those coaches work 80 hours a week and bring crazy revenue to the schools.. paying them for it should not have to be explained. Business 101- Return on Investment.. I think U of O and Nike got a great return.
Â
@oregonweathersucks  @englishdaisy First - a disclosure - I'm a Democrat and a Liberal, so if I follow line of reasoning here, I should be wanting to get out a large package of wet noodles and flog Chip to within an inch of his life. Sorry to disappoint, but he (through his builder) employed a number of other Oregonians, he's contributing (I hope) to the tax roles in Lane County, and in having to deal with all of us who know better than he does on almost any subject! I don't begrudge him his house, or the wealth he earned. He worked hard, and deserves it.
@englishdaisy @oregonweathersucks Well, Daisy, you pretty much covered it. Thank you and good job!
I like Chip...he should have stayed in Oregon....Pro has already tested some of the best college coaches...
Lets see Oregon play a few SEC teams before saying too much.....even Tenn will be a good test....
@Glenn Pierce They already beat Tenn... The SEC is not unbeatable!Â
This house was designed and built with no huddles
Does anyone know if Kelly is eligible for PERS, if so how much will he be paid for the rest of his life. I think Bellotti collects approximately $24,000 per month and his salary was less than Kelly's $3,500,000 per year. Get ready for another grand payoff??????????
@cascade.telcom Bellotti is the highest paid PERS person. He gets right around $45000 per month, a cool $540k per year. On nothing more than a handshake no less.
@cascade.telcom Kelly is eligible for PERS if he has 5 years as a member. Five years is the minimal time needed for a member to be vested. The next point is whether Kelly's minimum guaranteed salary of $3.5 million was all paid through the U of O. If so, it is used to calculate his benefit. The reason Bellotti 's pension is so high is the U of O ran his entire compensation through the school payroll rather than segregate the portion of salary paid by the Universty from that paid by other sources such as alumni. Bellotti also had many more years in the system than Kelly. Kelly is eligible for a PERS retirement at age 55 with 30 years of service (which he doesn't have) or at age 55 if he is vested (he should be). His pension will be calculated on his "subject" salary, years of service, and a constant of 1.67 unless he can retire under money match. The bottom line is Kelly will not get the kind of pension payment that Bellotti gets simply because he does not have the years of service Bellotti had but it will still be too much.
@cascade.telcom He should be. How much he gets depends a lot on when he joined the system. There have been several changes to the system, but the bulk of the changes have been to those entering the system since it can be hard legally to make changes to things that had been promised/contracted.
@cascade.telcom That is  criminal.  Talk about a PERS retirement.  When they cut back on pers I certainly hope they start big time at the top.  It makes me sick.
You mean he's not going to take it with him?
Can't say I care much for Kelly (you'll know why when the NCAA investigation is concluded and sanctions imposed) or his taste in home design but this is not an extravagant home by any stretch of the imagination for someone making a guaranteed $3.5 million per year. To put it into proportion, it would be like a person making $100,000 per year living in a $30,000 home. And another point: Kelly is entitled to spend his money however he wants. This really isn't a news story but then a lot of what KATU and its journalist-wannabes post is not news.
@I812 And the point of this KATU story is what?
Why would anyone need a 6200 square foot house , let alone a 1300 square foot patio ?? Oh ya, job creator !
 @sargerator he has the money
@sargerator Because he can.
@sargerator His patio is bigger than my place!
Looks like a few jealous OSU fans on here.
@JLO As a Platypus I get embarrassed by both sides equally. Most of the Beaver fans simply can't contain their joy that he is leaving... Which is fine. Chip made the Civil War boring again by dominating the Beavers. Heck, the Fiesta bowl was boring... and the other 12 games except for Stanford. The Beavers, more than any other team in the nation reap the benefits of Chip leaving for the NFL. Parity has returned, at least in spirit to the Civil War.
Chip will go on to more success. Regardless if he makes it in the NFL, he can always write his own ticket in the college game. He won 87% of his games as a head coach. 4 straight BCS bowls. A Rose Bowl win! Oregon's first National Championship game and it went down to the final seconds. 3 straight years of 12 wins... Few coaches are able to read and make the adjustments like Chip can. Fewer still can match his resume.
Â
@Bob McMasterson I couldn't have said it better myself. I wonder why people raise such a big stink over the fact that he's not married and has no kids. It's really none of our business, but perhaps it's the same reason I'm not married with children. I don't have to worry about being a victim of domestic violence. What I've seen recently on the news about disfunctional kids causing trouble it looks like I'm not missing much at all. Chip has it made in the fact he doesn't have to deal with excess baggage. He can do what he does best, and that's win games.
@JLO Not always OSU fans. There's no need to defend the fat little visor boy. Does he pay your bills? Then why so much love for him?
I think football coaches may be just a wee bit overpaid.
 @correct he probably is overpaid
@correct You think? Is this bum even married or have kids? Or is he just compensating for a "small" problem?
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com "Is this bum even married or have kids? Or is he just compensating for a "small" problem?"Â gay?
@I812 Pretty much.
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com I got the cliche although I have never heard it used in relation to a house before. I have seen the bumper sticker that says something to the effect of "nice truck, sorry about your dick" and shows a pickup that has been jacked up excessively.
@I812 He could be, but that has nothing to do with it. The whole cliche has to do with flaunting something huge and gaudy to make up for a "small problem". Of course, that may be a old saying that is not used anymore. Used to be used a lot to make fun of guys with big pickups.
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com whatever would make you call him a bum? Just because he might not have children, what difference does that make. I think you need to get your GAD and just try to get into the U of O...probably wouldn't make it.
"J" You DO have me wondering, what is a GAD anyway? Did you mean GED? Maybe you need to go back to school yourself?
@J Called him a bum because he lied and said he was staying. As far as the rest: I have no idea what this "GAD" your talking about is, and I did my time @ the U of O.
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com He's 49 and single. With such an enormous house, maybe he has a lot of cats or something.
Ducks, not cats!
@correct @iamtroglodite@yahoo.com
Maybe he has a operation like Willamette Valley Animal Rescue in Brooks going on in there.
