WEST LINN, Ore. – A crash involving two personal watercrafts on the Willamette River killed a man Friday, according to West Linn police.

His 7-year-old son was riding on the same watercraft. The boy was taken to the hospital to be checked out but is OK.

Friday was the boy's birthday.

The incident happened near the Cedaroak boat ramp close to the 4600 block of Elmran Drive at about 8 p.m.

According to police, the man suddenly stopped his watercraft and another Jet Ski driven by a family friend hit them. The friend was uninjured.

All three were wearing life jackets, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Dennis Elleson was on his boat and saw the crash. He rushed to help. He said it was a huge crash – fiberglass against fiberglass – and a big bang.

"I couldn't lift him out. The guy was too big," said Elleson. "I wanted to do CPR, but I couldn't get him out of the water. He's a big boy, so the other gentleman held onto his vest while I idled in real slow holding his head up."

Police said it appeared to be a terrible accident and don't expect any criminal charges to be filed.

They've notified the boy's mother. They believe everyone is from Portland.
