'It's a miracle - an answer to a prayer'
CARSON, Wash. - A widow worried about losing her home after a no-show contractor left her in a lurch got some good news this week when a local company stepped up to help her out.
Ever since Sally Daggy's husband died from kidney cancer two years ago, her life has seemed to snowball out of control.
"It's been terrible," she told us. "My life has been upside down. I don't even recognize it anymore."
One huge problem she has been facing since her husband's death has been getting her roof replaced. She signed a contract more than a year and a half ago for the work but despite promises from the company, Northwest Redevelopment, workers never showed.
Since then, a tree fell on her home and damaged the roof even more. Daggy filed a claim with her insurance company, Safeco, but two days later she got a letter saying they were going to drop her.
"That was the last nail in the house coffin," Daggy said.
But this week, Daggy was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief when a local company, Lifetime Exteriors, decided to help her out after they saw her story on KATU.
"My heart just went out to the whole situation," said Jeremy Manella, the company's owner.
Manella has committed to replacing Daggy's roof - it's a $10,000 to $12,000 project - and his company is doing it for free.
"There are no words to tell you how much I appreciate this," Daggy told Manella when he showed up at her door to give her the good news.
"I just praise God," Daggy added. "It's a miracle - an answer to a prayer. It's wonderful there are people like them to help people like me."
We first heard about Sallie Daggy and her situation from a news tip. If you have a story idea you would like us to pursue, send us an email at newstips@katu.com.
subarulz, I definitely am 250 percent grateful, thankful and appreciative to Jeremy Manella & Lifetime Exteriors, KATU 2 and Erica for being willing to help me SAVE my house when others were telling me to walk away. But nothing is impossible for God and He did work through total strangers to give me favor in their eyes and He did it in 7 days. Big cudos, hug and thanks goes to Melissa from Habitat for Humanity that was the one who initially contacted KATU about my problems with Northwest Redevelopment, Safeco and my roof. This is proof that MIRACLES do happen, God does exist and He does answer prayers in the most exceedingly way you ever thought or dreamed.  I do LOVE KATU 2, Erica, Melissa from Habitat for Humanity and especially Jeremy from Lifetime Exteriors :-) THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!! Sallie Daggy
 @saphireblu If your
Kudos to the fine people of Lifetime Exteriors to do this job and a big jeer to Safeco for being so heartless.
Why is everyone praising this company?  She clearly states this was an answer to her prayer so god made them do it.  Sounds a little ungrateful to me this woman.Â
I invite you to be in her position in life! then you will have the right to speak like you just did!
Awesome people,,
Well Done Jeremy!!!! I sure hopy your company Lifetime Exteriors gets a lot of good publicity, and  I really hope  some additional business comes your way.
Thanks to Jeremy for stepping up and helping this poor lady. She has suffered more than enough!
People should always check contractors out at the Oregon Construction Contractors Board. Northwest Redevelopment has several complaints filed against them. This is public record. Â http://www.oregon.gov/CCB/Pages/index.aspx
Â
No one should have to get the run-around from crappy companies like that, much less after such a devastating loss.  Major Kudos to Jeremy Manella, this is why we should all support our local small businesses.
Give this man and his company lots of paying business as a due reward!  May their business never be in need of customers and may they always have outstanding employee teams to meet their requirements. Â
Â
Kudos to them, and for KATUâs support.
This is one of the reasons KATU is my favorite station. They make themselves available for the public. This is a win-win that makes everyone happy. Mrs. Daggy gets a roof she seriously needs, but can't afford. Mr. Manella gets the best advertisement you can get, at a fraction of the price. The community (as evidenced below) gets a reminder that there are good solutions that work. Thanks K2!
Thanks for sharing the original story and the up-date, KATU..! Â Â As other posters have expressed, this restores a little of my faith in humans...and that's a nice feeling..! Â Â
Best wishes to you, Ms Daggy - and to you and your employees, Mr Manella.. I think you just racked up some really good Karma, and I hope it comes back to you in the form of some good roofing business..! Â Â
People helping people... it doesn't get any better than this..! Â :-)
A real human paying it forward. A business with a heart. People if you need a honest roofer look no longer.
Thanks you Lifetime Exteriors. I hope that you get some business from this act of generosity.
NW Redevelopment hasn't been doing business (legally) since 2009. Poor woman.
Â
Nice to see someone stepped up and helped her.
I love KATU. You guys really do a good job to make sure the peoples word is getting out when they need help. Thankyou for Lifetime exteriors for doing this!
Thank you Katu, thanks to Mannela whose skill and kindness walk hand in hand, smoothing the way, hope it helps Sally, blessings to you...
I LOVE stories like this. You, Mr. Manella, are a hero.
Kind of helps restore my faith in humanity. There are still some good people out there.
Great story, glad it worked out for her. Hoping the rest of the new year will work out well for her.
Â
Sometimes all it takes is a hand to pull you up and get you going again.
Â
Just when I get to be my most cynical, along comes a story like that this. Kinda restores my faith in the intrinsic good of people. Hats off to Lifetime Exteriors, and a special, warm hello to Mrs Daggy.
Great story!!!!
So happy for her!! Â God Bless Jeremy and Lifetime Exteriors. Â What a wonderful blessing in the new year for Sally. Â With all the things she has gone through, at least this is one less thing she has to worry about.
That is a very nice thing for Lifetime Exteriors to do. Since Mrs. Daggy doesn't seem to have family help or the where-with-all to maintain her home I hope she will sell it asap with it's new roof and move into a rental where she won't have to depend on the kindness of strangers again. Once is a miracle, more than that is leeching.
@ormom Just to set the record straight sallie is my mother, so she has family. Its clear to me from your comments, you have never endured hardship or needed help of any kind. Therefore, its pretty absured for you to have a voice at all in my mothers life situation! My mother has worked hard her whole life, so to read your nonsense about handouts make me pity you on how bitter inside you must be! Genuine good Hearted people did not take offense for someone willing to help my mother with the roof of her house... (Not her life!!!) Those who decide to look at this generous deed as something negative or leeching as you put it, simply seems ignorant, judgemental, and unhappy! Please stop projecting your "thoughts" about my mother, you have no knowledge to concern yourself! Its hurtful and slanderous!!!
@dezimaree there's nothing slanderous about her comments dezimaree.  Ormom is simply voicing her opinion just like everyone else.  All she's saying is she hopes your mom doesn't take advantage of more people in the future, that's all.   People are happy your mom got a free roof.  Just hope that's all she is after.  We don't want to see her on back on the news in a year again looking for more.    Or will it be you this this time?
 @ormom @dezimaree   here's Junior, she'll be on the news next!  Hey dezimaree, how much help did you do?   Dezimaree, are you really her daughter, or are you really Sallie again under a different name, phony!    Dezimarie, if comments are hurtful to you or your Mommy, don't read them.  And I'm not going to stop either, in fact, i'm going to write more now.  Â
 @ormom ~  ~  Not everyone has family available who can (or will) help them... and if she is like most of us so-called 99%-ers these days, she's probably living hand-to-mouth, and that often doesn't leave much disposable income for home maintenance, even when you know it's needed.   Her husband probably had some very high medical bills; cancer tends to do that... and not everyone has insurance to pay for it all.  There is just a whole lot that we don't know here...
I understand what you're saying, but there's been no indication in these stories that Ms Daggy is anything other than a lady whose life was coming apart as a result of things that were not her fault... Â I think we should be happy that there is still compassionate people around who are able to help - and are willing to do it. Â This is the America I grew up in...it's really good to see that it hasn't disappeared entirely yet...Â
 @margay1Â
I never said there was anything wrong with getting assistance when you're down. I said people need to use it to help themselves and not let it be a habit. I have helped a number of people down on their luck and some have used the help to get back on their feet and some haven't and they ended up right back in a mess of their own making again. Any additional money I might have to give won't be going back to the ones who wasted it or persisted in the bad habits that got them there in the first place. It does no good to keep bailing them out when they could help themselves but don't/won't. They just eventually end up back in the same place regardless so in future I put my money where I think it will help the most.
Â
The prior story showed the problem was a long term lack of maintenance on the house, not just the roof. If she has no hope of getting the money to make the other needed repairs then there is no good purpose to staying there and letting it fall down around her ears. If she gets out from under now, she might be able to walk away with something, including her health. People who live in housing that is falling apart are often made sick by it. That's all I'm saying. If you and others think that's a vile message to send then too bad. Your feeling good about the story does nothing for her either.
 @ormom If ormom's really a mom, and has children, I pity them.
 @MipsferÂ
You mean because they know how to live on their earnings, avoid debt, save for emergencies, make wise financial decisions, and how to make hard choices if/when they have to cut back to make ends meet (needs not wants take priority)? You can go ahead and thank me now that you won't be supporting them.
Â
@dezimaree help found her finally you say?   That's the same thing the Panhandler's say here in Portland on the freeway offramps!Â
I'm not projecting my anger on your mother, i'm just disgusted how people like your mother use the system to get what they want.   She's mad because she went to a contractor a year ago, paid absolutely nothing, got denied a loan from the bank, so now takes this to the media to gain the sympathy of the viewers.   All a ploy, all a game,  a user for sure.  Â
If your so concerned, why don't you go help her. Send a check to the new contractor, or maybe do some routine maintenance around the house, it needs it.
@Zig I see you chose to speak badly again about my mother with no real purpose other than anger! Why are you so angry with my her? If this is a personal thing you really should deal with you own issues first before commenting on someone else's life! Again, if there is nothing worth to what you say why do you concern yourself at all? There are few people that seem to know the entirety of the story, you seem to know nothing at all! My mother never begged for help, help found her finally! Where is the handout in that? Its so frustrating to have people bad mouth my mother without any truth or sense to it!! Its an extremely sincere deed what katu and lifetime exteriors has decided to do for her! Im just thankful that the world is not filled with people like you and there are genuine people in the mix. Please stop projecting your anger on my mother!!!!
@ormom @wondering   Wondering AKA Einstein, what story are you reading?  Story says she paid NOTHING!!!  Even got denied a loan from the bank.  She felt she was scammed even though she paid zip, zero, nothing!  expecting the contractor to pay labor costs, materials and then she pay them 1 year later with no interest.  Really?????  Now who's the ass!    Â
Ormom, your   100% right!   Â
Story says she's about to lose her house.  A person doesn't lose their home over a roof.   This is just another classic case, and yes, she'll be back on the news again looking for more handouts.  Â
 @wonderingÂ
WOW! No I didn't. 'Cause it wasn't in there!!!
Read again Einstein. She paid no money at all and was denied a loan. Probably why the roofing company never followed up.
@ormom  WOW! Did you not read the part of the story where it states that she had already paid another company to replace the roof? And got screwed by them? I think she was taking care of her own repairs, and it appears it may have used up her e-fund. Not everyone has an additional 10-12k sitting around to pay for something she already paid for. You are an ass.
 @ormom Seriously. You disgust me. Her husband dies and someone decides to provide a very gracious act of charity and you do nothing but rip on her. You must live a very sad existence. You should be ashamed.
What kind of government benefits do you have or had?
Â
She isn't dependant on these people helping her, she was living just OK before their help.Â
Â
You lack of sympathy is abhorrant. Have you ever struggled in life or do you live in your zombie fantasy land?
 @portlandborn83Â
Fantasy Land? Look who's talking, munchkin. I think I was expressing just the opposite - that living in the real world takes personal responsibility even when life has dealt us a hard hand. Will you still think I was wrong to say what I did if she's back on the news next year needing another repair?
 @portlandborn83 Â
Of course not.
@ormom So are you saying she should've not accepted the free assistance?
 @Repoman  @portlandborn83Â
LOL!! Thanks.
 @ormom  @portlandborn83Â
Â
He's not a munchkin; those folks live in Oz,
Â
He is an Oompa Loompa, they live in Loompaland in Charlie's Chocolate Factory (beneficed to him by Willie Wonka).
Â
Get your fantasy little people right!
Â
You should change your name to g-od so we will recognize you when you come here. Judgmental old battleax.
 @FireEyesÂ
KATU and Mrs. Daggy both accomplished what they set out to do and she got a generous helping hand up. I see nothing wrong with having and expressing the opinion that the ball should now be in her court to get her financial affairs on track and take advantage of this miracle by getting out from under a burden she doesn't seem to be able to handle. How do you know she doesn't agree with me herself?
Â
And I'm sure you and peregrine are both planning to mail fat checks today to help her out because you know she will put it to good use on her house, right?
Â
Â
 @ormom You and your comment still disgust me. You're obviously too bent up in your own little judgement to think charitably or without bias. Good day and I hope you get treated a lot better than you seem to think others deserve.
 @ormom Your comment disgusts me.
So she prayed to god to fix the roof?  I thought jesus was the handyman.. she should have prayed to Hestia, probably quicker.
"Daggy filed a claim with her insurance company, Safeco, but two days later she got a letter saying they were going to drop her"
Welcome tot he wonder world on insurance. Pay and pay and pay but once you file a claim you are dead wood.
Â
I got into an accident that the officer knew it was not my fault (cited the woman), both insurance companies agreed and neither sided with her (even hers), but then to get some money she sued me. My insurance company helped protect me but afterward they dropped me.
Â
So THEY AGREED it was her fault, but once they had to pay money, they didn't want ot be involved.
Â
