'Complete shock' in bank robbery charges against Oregon family

McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- The family from McMinnville that's behind bars in Texas on bank robbery charges was apparently having money problems before they moved to Texas this past summer.
Ronald Scott Catt and his children, Hayden and Abby, were arrested in Katy, Texas last week and officials there think they could be responsible for several Oregon bank robberies, as well.
On the former Catt home in McMinnville, there are five bullet holes in the front window -- just the latest strange twist in an even stranger case.
A notice on the home's front door that dates back to the end of June said the home has been abandoned and handed over to a mortgage company. Ronald Catt, who goes by his middle name Scott, and his son Hayden wore orange work vests and disguises as they carried guns and robbed a Texas bank, officials said. Police said Abigail drove the getaway car.
"Yeah, that's very unfortunate that you do anything like that," said Catt family acquaintance Danny Mealue. "And then to get the family members involved as well -- it's not good."
Until this past summer, Mealue helped Scott Catt with work around the family's McMinnville home. However, Scott Catt lost his engineering job with a Beaverton company and then apparently another job in Seattle.
"He did talk about selling ... selling and moving up to the Seattle area, but like I said, once he lost his job up there I stopped doing work for him," Mealue said.
Police in Texas tied the suspects to the purchase of construction vests at a Home Depot near where the Catts were living. They said the Catt family may be connected to a handful of bank robberies in Oregon, but FBI officials won't confirm whether they're looking at the case.
Hayden and Abigail Catt had been honor students at McMinnville High School. Hayden was a star on the McMinnville High School swim team and Abigail was also a member of the team.
Eric Lundeen knew all of the Catt family.
"It's a complete shock," he said. "When they were in McMinnville, you wouldn't suspect them. They were really, solid community members."
Now the family that used to live in McMinnville is being held on criminal charges in Texas. Scott and Hayden Catt face $140,000 bail while Abigail's bail is set at $100,000.
It never fails to amuse me how so many stories like this have neighborhood busy-bodies running to the camera to say, "It was a total shock! I never suspected them for an instant!"

Mmmmkay. Well, in the first place, NOBODY starts out as a bank robber, drug dealer, or killer. Something (usually bad) happens that leads them to feel that they either 'have no choice' or would be better off by doing said crime. The fact that none of the yakkers in this story saw anything leading them to expect that they had a potential Pa Barker on their hands just means that either the family was good at secrets, or hadn't made that choice yet.
Â
The second point being that, those comments are something of an indirect admission of being a dumb ass. Not paying attention, or picking up on obvious signs like a foreclosure and the loss of two jobs just says, "Hit me in the head with a rock! I'll get back to you on how hard it is." Dumb & Dumber.
Stupid is, as stupid does.Â
@pdxd Yeah, mostly the neighbor who just couldn't put 2 + 2 together and see that a foreclosure and TWO lost jobs might tip somebody over the edge. "Never saw it coming, man!"
Hello? Am I still on the same forum? A Blond troll posts a congratulations to this bank robbing family and some of you fall over yourselves agreeing? That's pretty pathetic. People die during robberies. He involved his children. This man is no hero. Both of his children were old enough to flip burgers if need be. Between the three of them they could have survived until something turned around for them. It's not that they couldn't survive, they couldn't live in the manner they'd become accustomed to.
@Lips Yep. I'm in a crummy financial situation myself, and I have yet to rob anyone or steal anything. I'm also a bit more of a creative operator in finding goods & services that people need in order to fill the gaps between the power bill and new clothes for a kid. If I were to hold up a bank though, there is NO WAY I would bring said kid along for the ride though. All that does is say, "This is how little I care about my offspring."
@Don_Keyshow Yeah, and they don't say why he lost his jobs. I guess we're assuming it's the economy? Could have been performance. 100% agree that if I ever had to turn criminal it wouldn't involve guns or my children.
@Lips I know, that's what I thought. I think she fell off the short bus as a child.
@pdxd Turns out it's our old troll ''fishbait''. lol.
@Lips Serious? Is that post-op? Wow, looks like that surgery went pretty well. I didn't think he could look that good.
Â
Wow!  Must be a sign of the times  when white people are driven to crime to 'survive'!!!

@MillersTale What an original comment. Robin Hood would doff his hat and offer you a bowl of gruel to hear how such a brilliant specimen as yourself managed to see the economics of racism.
Â
Seriously, go put on an Obama mask and crash a KKK cross-burning party.
I'm fed up with race baiting, no matter what color a mouth it comes out of.
Good for them! As the debate over the fiscal freakin cliff continues, some of us are weary due to the 1.5 trillion dollars that has been spent on 2 unessaary wars, the abundant corruption that is seemingly ignored and the continueing fraud and waste with the taxpayers dollars.  It may not be long before this "game" comes to a climax. I view this family as heroric. I would like to see the entire country go on strike. Yes it would be tough for some but well worth it in the long run. Joe sixpack who has done nothing wrong will finally have enough of the previously stated things and then wach out.
@Karla Readsalot Either you have a magic crack-pipe that you're toking on, or Readsalot is not the same as Comprehendsalot
@Karla Readsalot Karla, you are some strange person.Â
Being a retired LEO, what could we expect when life was good and we have a 'King' that fully intends to take it all away because we all make too much money and we have to pay for those that do not. This current regime will not be happy until everyone of us has to depend on the gubmint - ORYGUN is a microcosm of things to come - MORE TAXES, BY GOD!!!
@boned What's an LEO?

@Karla Readsalot Thanks for proving me right, troll.
As a retired LEO I assume you live off of some type of PERS system.  You do realize that Mr. Romney wanted to take that away...right? You do understand that...right?
@boned  Well played boned. Â
@Karla Readsalot You just got boned
@boned Oh, yeah... times are tough for you, right?
@boned Do you know you are part of the 47% Romney spoke of.. You sound stupid !
@boned You realize there have been times when taxes were higher than they are now, right? As an LEO, how was your salary financed?
@drosen  @boned He's a retired LEO so he is getting a comfortable "free ride" from the rest of us.
Wow. Doesn't sound like this will turn out to be a typical crime family. Desperate times, desperate measures?
