Cops collar man who fled traffic stop, hid behind toilet
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Police arrested a man accused of leading officers on a short chase and breaking into a home in Portland's Goose Hollow neighborhood after fleeing from an attempted traffic stop Thursday morning.
Sgt. Pete Simpson said officers noticed a basement door ajar Thursday morning while searching the neighborhood for 41-year-old Alex Loftin.
Officers spoke with the resident who told police she has two roommates but neither was home.
The woman gave police permission to search the house and they found Loftin hiding between a toilet and shower stall.
Police said the incident began when Loftin failed to stop his pickup truck for police on SW Broadway Drive at about 1:49 a.m.
He then led police on a short chase at speed up to 50mph on Broadway Drive.
Police broke off the pursuit after they said Loftin ran a red light. Loftin then ran from the truck into the Goose Hollow neighborhood near Burnside Street.
Before he was found, police said a woman told them Loftin tried to break into her apartment through a window while they were setting up a perimeter but she scared him off.
He was taken to the Multnomah County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on charges of burglary, reckless driving and attempting to elude police.
