PORTLAND, Ore. – A 54-year-old man was killed Monday evening after he crashed his motorcycle in Northeast Portland.

The crash happened around 5 p.m., police said.

Police closed Northeast Cornfoot Road west of Alderwood Road as they conducted an investigation.

They said that speed was a factor in the crash that killed Robert Carl Tilander Jr. of Southeast Portland. They said it isn't known yet whether drugs and alcohol also was a factor.

Police said the state medical examiner is awaiting toxicology results, which are expected to take several weeks.

Police said the motorcyclist lost control and hit a power pole. The crash occurred just west of the main gate to the Portland Air National Guard base. Police said it does not appear he has any connection to the base.

Police officers, medics and the man's friend tried CPR on him but were unsuccessful.
