Police arrest DUII suspect after crash with cyclist on bridge
PORTLAND, Ore. - Police arrested a man who they said was driving drunk when he hit a cyclist on the St. John's Bridge Friday evening.
Stephen Varney Schwartz, 58, faces DUII, reckless driving, assault and criminal mischief charges.
The incident happened around 6:20 p.m.
According to police, 23-year-old James Fallon-Cote was riding his bicycle westbound across the bridge in front of Schwartz when he was hit and knocked on to the windshield of the truck.
Fallon-Cote was taken to a local hospital with traumatic, but not life threatening, injuries.
The bridge was closed in both directions for a time while emergency responders arrived and then later as the investigation got under way.
