MILL CITY, Ore. – A 30-year-old man got a trip to jail and had his father’s Acura impounded after sheriff’s deputies said he was driving 112 miles per hour down a rural highway on Sunday morning.

A Marion County Sheriff’s deputy was monitoring traffic near Mill City along Highway 22 when he saw a red Acura RDX rounding a bend around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Don Thompson.

The deputy saw the Acura passing other cars and thought it was traveling quite fast. Using a LIDAR unit, the deputy confirmed the RDX was going 112 miles per hour, Thompson said.

That stretch of road has many curves and no center median between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

The deputy stopped the Acura and arrested Jason Scott Butters of Aloha, Ore.

Butters told the deputy he wasn’t sure of his speed, but that he felt “safe” because he was passing other cars, Thompson said.

Other drivers honked their horns and gave thumbs up motions as they drove by Butters and the deputy on the side of the road, Thompson said.

Butters faces charges of reckless driving and excessive speed. The Acura, which is owned by Butters’ father, was impounded.

Thompson said he has been convicted of speeding before.

The Marion County deputy who made the stop is part of the county’s 8-person Traffic Safety Team.
