Deputies: Driver busted for going 112 mph in father's car

MILL CITY, Ore. – A 30-year-old man got a trip to jail and had his father’s Acura impounded after sheriff’s deputies said he was driving 112 miles per hour down a rural highway on Sunday morning.
A Marion County Sheriff’s deputy was monitoring traffic near Mill City along Highway 22 when he saw a red Acura RDX rounding a bend around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Don Thompson.
The deputy saw the Acura passing other cars and thought it was traveling quite fast. Using a LIDAR unit, the deputy confirmed the RDX was going 112 miles per hour, Thompson said.
That stretch of road has many curves and no center median between the eastbound and westbound lanes.
The deputy stopped the Acura and arrested Jason Scott Butters of Aloha, Ore.
Butters told the deputy he wasn’t sure of his speed, but that he felt “safe” because he was passing other cars, Thompson said.
Other drivers honked their horns and gave thumbs up motions as they drove by Butters and the deputy on the side of the road, Thompson said.
Butters faces charges of reckless driving and excessive speed. The Acura, which is owned by Butters’ father, was impounded.
Thompson said he has been convicted of speeding before.
The Marion County deputy who made the stop is part of the county’s 8-person Traffic Safety Team.
Thank you very much to the officer that took the idiot off the road. Highway 22 is not built for what the nutcase was doing. It is very good that no one was killed because of the idiot. He would have probably survived if he had caused an accident.
Kudos to the law enforcement personnel that enforce the laws.
How is this front page news? I know a few cops in Washington County and they've told me they catch people on a semi regular basis going above 100mph. Some they arrest, some they just ticket. Yea it's stupid and depending on the conditions at the time it can be something that should be arrested for, but jeez a press release about it?Â
With the caption, I was expecting a much younger kid.....
By the time I was 30, I had my own car that would hit triple digits, but I had also matured enough to realize that it was not necessary for me to do so on roads where there were other cars.
Â
I'll bet Jason doesn't get a birthday present from Dad this year.
Yawn. Â What warm-blooded American male here hasn't gone over 100 MPH down a country road a few times in their life?
someone should REALLY take justin bieber's license away before he hurts someone.
well somebody's going to lose driving privileges
Glad they got him stopped. I hope they revoke his license. What a loser.
Nerd.... in Daddy's car. Momma's boy.
Awesome, my hats off to you sir. You are the 0.1% of drivers in this state and 20% of drivers elsewhere willing to drive in triple digits. I would advise next time purchasing a Laser Jammer and police scanner and you will avoid getting a ticket. It's expensive, but its worth the cost. I know how you feel being stuck driving behind Oregonians who barely go the speed limit and don't move over for cars in the left lane. But since there is so many liberal drivers in this pathetic state they feel entitled to be in the left lane going 5 under and maintaining the same speed as the car to the right of them. If cops wanted to they could get a ton of money from these idiots for traveling in the far left lane without passing anyone. But when you have liberal leaders they don't allow them to right these types of tickets.
I agree with you to a certain degree - Oregon drivers seem to be some of the slowest and most passive aggressive drivers around. Everyone thinks they have the right to enforce the law... BUT, there is a time and place if you are going to speed, and hwy 22 while passing other cars is not one of them. Sounds like he is clearly an idiot and has placed himself and more importantly many others in danger - there are many things that can happen on a hwy like that - cars pulling out, animals, cyclists on the road - all factors that warrant speeds much lower than 100+.
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China MOVE OUT OF OUR STATE! YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE
@S I live in washington we move over for fast drivers and don't hog the road unlike you.
@CTWU Nothing like people who think they are the road police.... GET OVER!
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China Yes, the law says that but it also says that you must go the posted speed sign ipso facto (latin, don't worry, there are other languages out there) the posted speed MUST legally be the maximum allowable speed of travel.
@CTWU law says slower moving vehicles keep right thats you
Bulls.h.i.t. I was just up there, going to Whidbey Island. You know how many people with WA plates would not get over?!?!?!  Quit being so judgmental and self-centered.  Â
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China Not true. I live in Washington, too. And I obey the speed requirements. And I don't always pull over, either. Because I'm not breaking the law.
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China My father was killed in a car wreck by someone with an attitude like yours. It's not a game and it isn't funny.  There is a speed limit for a reason and if going triple digits is what you want to do, then go to PIR and do it there and not on the roadways where people want to get to their destinations safely and without having idiots like YOU on their bumpers.
@Justanother1 Sorry to hear about your dad. Sounds like that driver should still be in prison for vehiclar mansloghter. But If you go to any other state in the nation you will find that majority of drivers due triple digits just fine. For example going down to LA I was caught in bumper to bumper traffic doing 115mph in the second to the fast lane. Why, its because people who drive slow stay away from those who want to get somewhere with out leaving 1 hour ahead of time like you do in oregon. I past 5 highway patrol cars and they did nothing b/c everyone was going well above the speed limit. Try going to LA and do the speed limit in the left lane you will get pulled over asap if not shot from other drivers. My goal is to raise awareness that drivers need to move over and not hog the road like they do in this state.Â
@CTWU If fact most Highways in he US a designed with a MINIMUM Safe speed of 75 mph (65 in hilly terrain) look up the AASHTO. That takes into account terrain, slope, regular weather and yes even traffic conditions. If roads were only designed to go the speed limit then Emergency Response Vehicles would have a hell of time wouldn't they!? Â
@OregonSon Don't Drive in AZ, break checking on the fast lane around here will get you shot (God Bless the best gun laws in the country)
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China, Don't compare drivers in the US to German Drivers, In Germany it is a 2 year process to get a drivers license, including I believe a month just on wet weather driving, with time spent on a wet Track, hence the lowest traffic deaths in the developed world, despite have road without a speed limit.
In the US if you cant fog up a mirror with your breath you can drive. Hence you have all the walking corpses with 50ft Motor homes!
FACT: If you are In the fast Lane and impeding Traffic REGARDLESS of the Speed you are a danger to all around you and are breaking the law. For the record , I grew up in SoCal Lived in Oregon, LV and now AZ (plus time spent in Europe) OR has the 2nd worst drivers in the US, second only to Las Vegas,. But most of them are drunk, what is ya'lls excuse!?!
@Justanother1 Speed limits in the US have more todo with $$$ and less todo with automotive safety.
@randomdude and madeinchinadude---follow me, follow me! I stand on my brakes for pushy drivers who try to intimidate by tailgating to make me go faster than the speed limit.  It's been quite the money maker for me!
Oregonians, even. Remember "edit" options?
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China @Justanother1 I-5 has great straight stretches back to California where you can drive however it is you claim that they do it down there. You're an exact example of why Oregons loathe SoCal types in our state.
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China You get a ticket for obstructing traffic for going too slow in the fast lane. That is a policy that needs to be adopted over here. too many idiots don't understand the left lane is for passing and getting somewhere, not going 5 under and acting like rolling road blocks.
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China I truly hope you'll rethink your reckless way of driving going forward. Your life isn't worth ruining just for the sake of doing what you want to do on the roadways. Don't kill someone; including yourself by being this arrogant about speeding. Please. . .
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China FYI - he died in Texas.  The guy driving also had his 16 year old son in the front seat of his vehicle. That young man had to see, firsthand, how driving too fast and too selfishly can cost others their lives - including their own. He was emotionally damaged by the trauma of the events.
Don't think that ANYONE has the right to drive over the speed limit and think they are immune from the laws of the land. Arrogance behind the wheel is just as dangerous as drinking and driving. It's the thought that you are impervious from being harmed or causing harm that makes people dead.Â
Well apparently hwy 22 was able to manage to handle that speed. I wounder what happened?
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China I'm not even addressing legally proven systems or not. Our roads, despite how cars may or may not be designed to perform, are simply NOT designed to handle those speeds. Sure, if we had a high speed travel system, especially with integrated Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) -- Germany is advanced in this -- then, yes, those speeds might actually be safe and achievable but not on our current physical infrastructure. Add to that any legal or illegal medications people may be taking and how they affect driving and all bets are off (and that doesn't include texting or talking on a cell phone or eating or anything else and driving).
Â
Your assumption is that everyone else will act in the way you expect them to. That isn't human nature.
@CTWU  @Justanother1 If you have a car that can perform at 100+ you have tires that can perform at 100+. Then you have the stability control such as brakes that can perform at 100+ along with suspension, steering, etc. You can go 100+ without any problems. With the amount of rain, and the provision to allow studded tires, no wonder the roads here are garbage. If you build it right then you can allow for speed. For example go to Germany and watch how you get passed by someone at 200+ mph eating a sandwich. There a legally proven system that works.
@CTWU  @Justanother1 I would but Obama won't do anything about the amount of ileagal residents nor the drugs. Washington is close to Cali, but then you got the oregon's slowly moving up here to get out of the welfare state slowing the rest of us down.
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China  @Justanother1 And if you like the way people drive in California, move back there!
@Oregon_University_of_Made_in_China  @Justanother1 Speed limits are put in place for a reason. If you are traveling in an area unfamiliar to you (or that might regularly be traveled by people unfamiliar with that stretch of the road), speeding is beyond stupid. Believe it or not, traffic engineers spend years designing safe roads. The embankments, turns, degrees of steepness, etc. are actually all highly technical equations that counterbalance the friction of the tire as it travels across the pavement. These roads were never designed to handle 100+ mph traffic. At best, 20 ~ 25 mph over the recommended limit is the maximum "safe" driving speed and that's only under IDEAL driving conditions. You never know when an animal or vehicle or whatever might dart out in front of you, either. Until you can legally PROVE to me that 100+ mph is "safe" I refuse to believe you. And, FWIW, I've driven in over half of the states in the country and I disagree with your statement that most drivers drive triple digits just fine. In Pennsylvania, for example, drivers stop at freeway entrances. Now that's a surprise if you're accelerating and everyone in front of you is treating it as a stop!
What a Baboon.. There is NO reason for going that fast on Hwy 22. I wonder what hsi dad di when he found out?

@onceagain Yes, lets kill everyone who does one stupid thing. Pretty sure we can fix everything this way. While we're at it why don't we execute everyone who has ever broken a single law as long as that law is meant to protect the greater population. Yes, it was a stupid thing to do. Does he deserve to die over it? No. That's why the laws are in place to educate and reprimand those who do not adhere to them. I love how the first answer is to kill, castrate, or sterilize everyone. Go spread your hate somewhere else.
I bet he is grounded by his daddy now.
Â
BTW.. Nice looking shades Butters.
Â
Another POS lacking grey matter.Highway 22 is known as one of the most dangerous highways in the nation. This genius put many lives in immediate danger. He needs to have his liscence revoked and his dad needs to address that he has a deadbeat 30 year old son living in a 16 year old body.
Oh Jason, you mean you have some special exemption from the laws of physics? Dude, get real.
At least it appears as though the laws of the State of Oregon are still applicable.Â
Â
** Typo Alert** Â So, is the perp 'Butler' (as captioned under photo) or 'Butters' Â (as in the SouthPark character)?Inquiring minds want to know..Â
He felt "safe" because he was PASSING other cars? Really? I'm sure the other car drivers did not feel safe. Get real, buddy boy!
His dad should know better.Â
30 and driving dad's car. Oh my.
@EnoughAlready That says a lot just in itself. Time for the kid to get his own car.
"I was at a safe speed because I was passing cars like the're standing still."Â
Â
Spoken like a true squirrel.
Too bad he was not a ball player from OSU and smoking pot then they would have let him go...
Right???
@cptmac11 No that would be a player from the U of O...... :)Â
