Deputies, K-9 find 7 pounds of pot during I-84 traffic stop

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sheriff’s deputies arrested two men who they said had seven pounds of marijuana in their car during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 Friday.
Multnomah County sheriff’s deputies stopped a Honda Civic on I-84 eastbound at around 4 p.m.
A sheriff’s office K-9 named Spencer alerted deputies of marijuana in the car.
Deputies arrested 39-year-old Jon Stavenjord of Estacada and 30-year-old Thomas Daniel Salinas of Bend. The two were taken to the Multnomah County Jail where they face several drug charges.
I wonder what the county taxpayers pay for a marijuana sniffing dog with a handler. $500,000 ?
To get a few bags of weed? OMFG In the first place it's a waste of time, but in the second place it's as if we have unlimited resources for enforcing stupidity.
All law enforcement dogs should be trained for explosives or to track, drug dogs should be retired.
Good dog.....woof woof (wagging tail)
Next week the news will be, "Deputies disposed of six pounds of marijuana confiscated from a Honda Civic..."
Officers should get a special commission from Mexican drug cartels for helping to wipe out their competition.
"Sheriffâs deputies arrested two men who they said had seven pounds of marijuana in their car during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 Friday." Traffic stop really? It looks like some one rattles out the two amigos.Â

Talking about MJ, I have no problem with the users, some one really needs it, but not every one. That why I have problem with the dealers, some ones make profit on the addicted poeple, make the poor poorer.
 @tptpttp ...which is no different that cigarettes, alcohol, strip clubs, gambling, or, when I was in college and friends of mine could barely feed themselves, Tetris.
That's animal abuse.
 @Icarus Most K-9 dogs are conspicuously eager to do their job.
It doesn't matter if they didn't have weapons or that it was "just marijuana." In the state of Oregon pot is illegal. Possessing less than an ounce holds a maximum fine of $1,000. Having less than an ounce within 1000 feet of a school can get you 30 days in jail and a fine up to $1,250. If you have more than an ounce it's a felony that can land you 10 years of jail time and a $375,000 fine.

 @thewhitechickoj No need to wag your finger and preach, Nanny Statist. We all know you won, and that they'll be kicking violent offenders and thieves out to make room for two guys who weren't stealing or hurting anyone.It's working just great. Because of these Draconian laws, NOBODY smokes weed anymore. Nobody.Â
 @thewhitechickoj So what's your point? All this shows you is that big industry, such as the alcohol and/or tobacco corporations and their lobbyists, can buy enough politicians to pass asinine laws and/or potential sentences, in order to protect their profit making interests. So a person with less than an ounce of marijuana in Oregon can receive a maximum fine of $1000 but a person with just over an ounce can be charged with a felony and receive ten years imprisonment and a $375,000 fine! Does this make sense to you? And in some states, a person can receive a substantial term in prison FOR POSSESSING A SINGLE JOINT, whereas in other states, e.g. Oregon, California, etc, the same person cannot be sentenced to a single day in jail.   But hopefully all this will be moot in the not-too-far future, here in Oregon and then inevitably throughout the United States, as state after state follows Washington's and Colorado's lead and legalize it.
 @Michael L. My point is that marijuana is in fact illegal in the state of Oregon. It doesn't matter if you agree with the law or not, the law's in place and is being enforced.
What some people fail to realize, is that it is an illegal drug, therefore these guys deserve to go jail.Â
 @Just me Nope, sorry. That ideology belongs in North Korea and Iran.I will always stand on the side of liberty.
 @Just me  Just because marijuana is "an illegal drug" [actually it is a "controlled substance"], does not mean that these particular guys "deserve" to go to jail. All criminal activity is a matter of degree, such as a person who tries to shoplift a loaf of bread in order to feed his/her hungry family is not as deserving of jail time as the person who tries to shoplift a Blu-Ray player or DVD player, Â
Â
County jails throughout the state are matrixing people charged/sentenced for serious crimes out of custody simply because they don't have the room or staff to keep them - there is "no room in the inn". Do you really want to take up jail space incarcerating these two fellows for their essentially victimless crime, so that a person who has truly victimized another person(s) is matrixed out?
Well, they didn't get Mexican drug cartels, human slaves, meth dealers, or interstate drug smugglers...Just some local good ol' boys not meaning any harm. It's sort of like having a trunkload of AR-15 magazines. It scares people so, there's a law, so, guess what, kids. Your lives are ruined for growing and selling a native plant and transporting it in what, as a gun owner, I would call a high-capacity magazine.
Does it make ANY sense?! LOCK PEOPLE UP FOR STEALING, ASSAULTING OR KILLING (or not paying taxes, but, you haven't given them the option) NOT FOR POSSESSING STUFF THAT ISN'T HURTING ANYBODY.A trunkload of cigarettes, bullets, knives, chewing tobacco, Nazi propaganda, fertilizer, a couple of cans of gunpowder, cases of Everclear (stamped)... none of these would have gotten these people in trouble but they're going to prison because of plants most people think God created.What a great day for America.
Good dog Spencer! Good boy, goooood booooy...
Spencer is not a nice dog.. That's what those devils are saying !
 @dougrpdxÂ
Â
Like any dog Spencer is just a tool of his handlers; it isn't the fault of the dog.
Let these guys out of jail and wipe this off their records.  Marijuana-prohibition garbage has run its worthless course for too long and it needs to stop.
 @deathmetalcat  It's still a crime for now, whether you agree or not. And guys like this who commit these crimes also commit lots of other crimes, just as any other drug dealers do. They are turds, not victims of law enforcement. Turds like any other criminals.Â
 @StealthActivist  @deathmetalcat So when they outlaw AR-15 magazines, will that mean that by owning them we're turds who commit other crimes just like other criminals?
Way to go, Spencer! Have a nice soup bone - on me!
Â
Spencer is one very handsome Sheriff.
 @whirledworldÂ
Â
That's creepy...
7 whole pounds! Now the citizens of Oregon are safe and secure! Come on, 7 pounds of marijuana doesn't warrant a KATU story. Of course, the purpose of this story is merely to show off K-9 Spencer but, most likely, he has been involved in bigger busts than this one.Â
Â
Yes, these two guys were probably going to sell a pound or two to friends or acquaintances, or break down the pounds into smaller amounts, e.g., ounces or lesser amounts, and sell them, and make a bit of money for their efforts, but their getting busted isn't a newsworthy story. And several drunk drivers probably went by the Sheriff Deputies while they were spending their valuable time with these two guys. All for the grand total of 7 pounds of a herb with medicinal properties.Â
Great looking K9
Job well done. Those cops are very proud. 7 pounds is such small time stuff its crazy this is even in the news. Now please do something like find Logan Storm!
 @happyptown $20k+ worth of marijuana is just "small time stuff". MJ is becoming a huge problem because of the ridiculous OMMP allowances. One person can only possess 1.5lbs of mj at a time, yet is able to have 6 full grown plants and 18 starters. a full grown mature plant can get you 2lbs on a good harvest. How many growers do you think dump the excess?? NONE. There all so high and stupid that they advertise if for sale as a "donation", which is illegal, then wonder why they go to jail on delivery and manufacture charges.Â
 @tappedout15  @happyptown Why do they go to jail for any reason other than the same sort of Nanny State paranoia and legislation that is going to make criminals out of law-abiding semiautomatic rifle owners?They go to jail on delivery and manufacture charges for the same reasons that Feinstein and Rahm want to punish gun dealers and manufacturers. It's the same reasons.
 @tappedout15 When complaining "There all so high and stupid", you should probably take care to not exceed the stupidity of the subject of your ridicule.  It should be "They are all so high and stupid" or "They're all so high and stupid".
You sound like a grower yourself...,or a cop.
You have the right to remain stupid
Imagine how much money would be coming in from this pot if it were legal and taxed, and how much money would be saved if these guys and others like them weren't incarcerated.
 @scoreboard You are crazy if you think there will be revenue coming in from legal MJ. Like in Washington, all it's doing is allowing the idiots who grow too much pot (everyone with a grower card) to sell it illegally (ie "donation") because you can possess an ounce. You think the pot heads that are making money are going to do it legally...Right...
 @tappedout15  @scoreboard Yeah, because bootleg alcohol is all the rage to this day...
Â
Derp.
 @scoreboardÂ
They would have been arrested for tax evasion if it was legal and taxed.
 @RalphCramden  @scoreboard The problem is, you can't call the IRS and say "I have 7 pounds of weed. How much do I owe you?" unless you want to give up your freedom.The law has doomed them to criminality. It gives them no chance, and yet most people sell it or give it to friends and family. I would like to see where they have harmed anyone before blowing tax dollars and taking people's freedom. My opinion is the same as it is with gun collectors who have tons of stuff I'll never need to shoot. It's not my business to tell them what's what as long as they don't hurt anybody.
 @Playanekes  @scoreboardÂ
I think government needs to say out of it and if someone wants to use week then let them. Instead government it going to try and tax it which is like trying to tax the wind.
Â
The only place government should be involved in this issue is with DUII's and kids using weed.
 @Playanekes  @RalphCramden Well of course not, not under the current law. I'm saying that if it were legal and taxed....
 @RalphCramden  @scoreboard Just pay "The Man" and all is good ...right?
 @RalphCramden Possibly....but it is early in the year so they have 11 months to decide whether or not to claim it on their taxes.....
But officer, I have an OMMP card.
Â
Lots of illegal drug dealers on Craigslist.
http://portland.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=ommp&srchType=A&minAsk=&maxAsk=
From the way these rocket scientists brains operated, looks like they were smoking some of their profit.
oopsÂ
Â
Even our criminals are being dumbed down by the "new normal". Dumb azzes - if you are going to transport drugs, drive the speeed limit and make sure your plates and tags are current.
 @wondering Don't help them out. They could be reading this.
 @TreeWizard  @wonderingÂ
Â
they can't read.
Great job on the part of Officer Spencer!!
 @Just Lookin Deputy Spencer : )
 @186272sec I stand corrected..."Deputy Spencer"..:-)
