MILWAUKIE, Ore. – Investigators said a man found girls on the Springwater Trail, lured them back to his apartment with alcohol, handcuffed them, then sexually abused them.
Child abuse detectives on Tuesday arrested Brandon Murdock James after they said he abused three 13-year-old girls on three separate occasions.
On each occasion, James, 24, would find the girls along the trail and then convince them to come back to his apartment at the Heather Brae Commons, according to Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mark Nikolai.
"He would tell them he was throwing a party, then take them back to his place," Nikolai said.
The apartment is about ten blocks away from the trail.
James got the girls drunk once back at his apartment, Nikolai said. When they were drunk, investigators said James handcuffed them and performed sexual acts on them.
He faces charges for sexual abuse, unlawful sexual penetration, kidnapping and possessing child pornography. He is expected to make a court appearance Wednesday afternoon.
James also babysat other children in the area and investigators want to know if there are potentially more victims, Nikolai said.
Police did not say if the girls were alone or with other people when James found them. It's also not clear what date or time of day the abuse happened.
A woman packing up things in the apartment where James lived didn't want to talk to a KATU reporter Tuesday night.
One neighbor said James looked vaguely familiar but didn't know much about him. But her little girl saw James' photo and identified him by his first name.
"It concerns me that my 6-year-old knows who this person is, and I don't," said Angela Clark.
Detectives haven't said yet how they learned of the alleged sex abuse.
James is being held on more than a half-million dollars bail.
Anyone with information about the case or about potential victims is encouraged to call investigators at (503) 723-4949 or email their online form.
