Deputies: 'Wheelbarrow Burglar' targets homes near Detroit Lake

DETROIT LAKE, Ore. – Marion County sheriff’s deputies are looking for a serial burglar who they said broke into several vacation homes in the Detroit Lake area and lived in them for days at a time.
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Billie Jo Shrader, took showers, ate food and drank liquor that he found in the homes, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Don Thomson. He also stole camping gear, blankets and clothes when he left. Deputies dubbed Shrader the “Wheelbarrow Burglar” because they said he used a wheelbarrow to haul away the stolen items.
Shrader, a transient, targeted homes with no alarm systems, Thomson said. He broke windows and pried doors open to get inside.
Six burglaries were reported at vacation homes in the area in the last week, but Thomson said it’s unclear when they occurred.
On Oct. 28, a Rod Jones arrived at his cabin in Idanha on the North Santiam Highway when he discovered a man, later identified as Shrader, lying naked in his bedroom. The homeowner confronted Shrader, who quickly put on clothes and ran away. Jones took a cell phone photo of Shrader and found a Curry County Jail inmate identification card that he left behind, Thomson said.
"It concerns you when someone's in your house and especially when he headed toward Laurie, my wife," Jones said. "We're a little more prepared when we go up there now."
The card and photo helped deputies identify Shrader. He is described as a white man who is 5’9’’ tall and weighs about 190 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen with a full beard.
Thomson said Shrader has a history of burglary and trespassing and is wanted in Curry County for parole violation.
Deputies don’t know if Shrader has a car.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of Detroit Lake to watch out for Shrader. Anyone who sees him is asked to call 9-1-1.
I live there. I am just now hearing about this? If he comes to my house, he may check in, but he won't check out.
It looks like no razor blades or shaving implements went missing.
He moved in! Â Awesome, I LOVE the entitlement complex from these guys....even drank their liquor :) Â Â Â Â I would too
If I owned vacation home I would certainly secure it. in this day and age it's easy and inexpensive to set up cameras with software that can alert you to motion, etc, etc, etc. Well worth the investment.
Kudos to the homeowner for having enough presence of mind to take a picture of the suspect. Finding a stranger in your home is scary and this could've turned out badly for many reasons. Thankfully that was not the case. I hope the authorities find him soon.
Why wasn't this Parolee trained for a career in prison, placed in REAL HOUSING when released, and hooked up with a living-wage job IMMEDIATELY?
@August100 August, there are people who just do not want the things you propose. They do not live by our logic and our rules. Some training and moreso housing is available if you follow the rules.
@August100 Your logic is tragically flawed.Â
@Beergod No! This MANHUNT is what happens when they are not helped out...
 @sittinonmybutt  @August100  @Jared  @BeergodÂ
He'll get caught up with. We are all watching for him up here!Â
@August100  @Jared  @Beergod Hardly criminal? Destroying peoples property and stealing possessions, are you kidding me? What kind of lawless society do you want to live in? Convicted of drugs in CA and 2 burglary counts in OR - wish my bro was packing when he confronted the putz.Â
@August100  @Beergod Well if he was an upstanding citizen he wouldn't have gone to jail in the first place and wouldn't be in this position. It's not the prisons  or taxpayers responsibility to see that this guy gets a job and a home! It's all on him to take care of himself. There are much more deserving people out there who deserve help over this guy! It's the poor me, entitlement mentality that's got this country screwed up in the first place. Take care of yourself!
@Jared  @August100  @Beergod The "burglary and trespassing" combo suggests they are related to him being HOMELESS; hardly criminal.
@August100 @Beergod Who is to pay for it? The taxpayer? Why is it our responsibility to sacrifice our money for criminals? Tragic as it can be, the fact remains that many criminals leave corrections and assimilate into productive roles. So again I ask, why is it our job to help those that do not even try? Single mothers make it on minimum wage and welfare, why can't these men?
arm your selves and go check on your vacation homes, and when you are questioned he was coming at you and it was self defense. Rid the earth of scum like this
I'm glad I'm not walking in this guys shoes and hope I never do. Hopefully he'll turn himself in and no one will get hurt.
@Lips I was told of this creep several weeks back. Supposedly he returned to one of the homes and set it on fire also..   Sounds like he has ramped up his theft spree though..
@Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu That's right, you live out there. Be careful. Sounds like he's stocking up on camp supplies, who knows where he'll stake out. Hope he didn't come across any guns.
@Lips  I hope not on the guns! More then likely if he does, then it would probably be someone just not home as a lot of the locals do hunt..
Â
He should tread carefully though lol, he could wind up with a butt load of buckshot..
I suspect that Mr Shraders apparent need for housing, food and shower facilities will be met shortly by the Oregon Dept of Corrections hospitality programs.Â
Â
Yet again, a persons rational thinking helps law enforcement to identify, and hopefully catch and convict, another criminal. As much as the homeowner probably wanted to enact some sort of 'justice', he used his head and got a picture.Â
I have close friends in Idahna -- I'm going to check on their welfare right now!
@Gravity Works! We be fine here, lol! This guy has had a beard earlier on. They also think one of the homes he stole from he went back and set it on fire! There is always someone home here. We have been on alert for over a month with this POS...Â
A ex son in laws family owns one of those cabins up there by the bridge too!Â
