Deputy rescues suicidal woman from Molalla River
MOLALLA, Ore. – A sheriff’s deputy saved a suicidal woman’s life after she jumped into the Molalla River Tuesday night.
According to Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputy Bryon O’Neil, a concerned mother called the sheriff’s office and said her 48-year-old daughter told her she was going to kill herself by jumping into the Molalla River.
Deputy Corey Saffer spotted the woman's vehicle about 20 minutes later parked at Wagon Wheel Park north of Molalla. Saffer heard a noise near the river and arrived in time to see her jump into the water, O’Neil said.
Saffer called for help and ran down the bank to keep up with the woman when he spotted her clinging to some trees at the edge of the river.
A Molalla police officer arrived and got some rope out of Saffer’s patrol car. They looped the rope around the woman's body and held onto her until a rescue crew arrived. Saffer continued to talk to her while they waited, and she told him that she did not want to die anymore, O’Neil said.
Rescue crews pulled her out of the river and took her to Portland Adventist Hospital. Her condition is unknown.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24 hours a day by calling 800-273-TALK (8255).
Great job, Deputy Saffer! Hope she gets the help she needs!
The dumbath really methed up!
 @Pointblank That's lame.
Hopefully she wasn't buying into the Mayan end of the world nonsense. It's nice to hear about a police officer actually putting his life at risk to save another.Â
@Jamie Oh wait, it is only a few weeks away now. 12-21-12. I plan on working that day too.Â
@Jamie Can't see that having anything to do with it. Just party like there's no toMaya!
@Jamie It happens all the time. People just chose to seek out the bad things that a few do.
It usually spikes around the holidays... suicide is selfish!
@Funky-Munky ~  Sadly, the holidays can be extremely painful for people who are already lonely, or those who already feel that their lives are on the decline, for whatever reason...  Most of them are not intentionally selfish; they just can't think beyond the pain that they're feeling; many do not know where to turn for help.  Â
Â
I hope this lady will get whatever help she needs to restore her to mental and emotional health.
Â
Well done, CCSO officers...
Kudos to those who worked hard to save this woman's life. Hopefully she can get the help she needs and this incident will motivate her to find many reasons to live and to live well.
". . . she told him that she did not want to die anymore . . . "
Unless death is immediate in a suicide attempt, this is the usual decision, and most especially if the person is just trying to get attention by the attempt. Â Some serious psychiatric therapy is called for, here! Â Hope she can afford it.
@Gravity Works! I seriously doubt that she was simply seeking attention. Usually, if one has that in mind, he/she will either overdose or slash wrists, and then call for help in time to be saved. This woman's choice to jump into a river makes me believe she sincerely wanted to die when she jumped.
@Gravity Works! I guess gravity didn't work for her the way she had initially hoped.
