Documents: Man arrested for having sex with child nearly 50 times

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Prosecutors filed formal charges Wednesday against a Yakima man accused of child rape. Travis Padgett is also charged with giving methamphetamine to a minor.
Details of the allegations against Padgett are disturbing. Action News learned Padgett has a long history of run-ins with the law but, so far, has managed to avoid serious jail time.
It was an unexpected revelation to a Student Resource Officer that sparked this startling investigation.
"It's very, very disturbing and very disheartening for anybody," said Capt. Rod Light, Yakima police spokesperson.
Police said Padgett started a sexual relationship with someone he knew well and that he took advantage of being in a position of trust.
According to court documents, Padgett was giving the child meth and having sex with the child repeatedly. Padgett allegedly made the child have sex with an older woman as well.
Investigators said the two had sex nearly 50 times since last summer.
"To play devil's advocate, when YPD receives a bizarre case like this, is one of the first things you look at whether this could all be made up?" Action News asked.
"You always have to consider the credibility of the victim," Light said.
But police told Action News there is no doubt. Investigators said items found in Padgett's basement alone were enough to put him in jail.
"Based on some of the evidence we recovered it would lead me to believe that it probably wasn't a basement being used for storage," Light said.
KIMA discovered a connection between Travis Padgett and well-known Yakima felon Jacob Lucey.
Lucey was originally sent to prison for his involvement in a shooting at Padgett's home over drug money. Lucey recently made headlines when he never returned from a jail furlough.
Padgett's history indicates he's no stranger to the legal system. Action News dug up a rap sheet of ten cases. None involved serious jail time. If they did, could this case have been avoided?
"Is it troubling for law enforcement that nobody saw this coming ... that it went on for six to seven months allegedly?" KIMA asked.
"Well this stuff happens, sadly to say, this is an egregious case," Light said. "These cases are not uncommon."
Officers agree the details of this case are among the worst of the worst.
Padgett's bail was set at $1 million.
WHAT IS THE AGE of the "child"?!The story makes it sound like the child was a 4-year-old. If it was a 17-year-old then it was probably consenual!
Washington has some prison on an island where the inmates are coddled and taken on shopping trips each day. I think it's just for those convicted of sexual offenses, (who are, after all, really the victims). All they have to do is say that George W. and Dick Cheney caused their perversion, and they get a Happy Meal and a trip to Target.
The story makes it sound like the child was a 4-year-old. If it was a 15-year-old, and a boy, and it happened 50 times, it was probably much more consensual than the story would suggest.

Don't you just love that victims have to be considered the guilty party - until they are investigated. Amazing and sad. Always suspect the child. No matter what. Children are always the sexual predators?Â

 @englishdaisy I know I'm going to get a lot of negative responses for this, however you have to rule out false claims of sexual abuse. While these are rare, you do need to be thorough in order to prevent anyone from being wrongfully accused of such a horrific crime. Even if proven untrue, the stigma will follow the person their entire life. That said, I think they should throw the book at this creep.

May I remind everyone that there is no known way to rehabilitate sexual predators of children. I think the mandatory sentence should be life in prison with no perks or priviledges. We do not need to have these people on the streets where they will revert into their previous behaviour. One other thing, is the older woman being charged as well? She should be.
Sick! What is wrong with these people? A part of me wishes that we could send them all off to just live in their own colonies, away from the rest of us. However, then they'd end up reproducing, and then abusing those offspring. Still, just sick, sick, sick.

Well, it SHOULD be uncommon and perhaps even non-existent. The reason it keep happening is that for some reason these sub-humans are continually re-released into the public. Find some remote island with a volcano and drop them off from a helicopter. If they happen to fall into the mouth of the volcano...OOPS!

I had jury duty once and was interviewed by the lawyers for a 3 time loser child molester. The sick fk sat there with a smug smile while the lawyers asked us personal questions to see if we were fit to sit in judgement of him. I will never forget the obvious pleasure he took watching his prospective jurors squirm. I told his lawyers I could not find him anything other than guilty. So they excused me.

We really need to stop putting people in prison for possesion for use of drugs. Â That will open room in our prisons for t**ds like this to get life with no possibility of parole. Â As sad as this story is it will be worse the day this loser walks out of jail a free man.

KATU: Please pay close attention to the language you use in your reporting of incidences of child molestation and child rape. The wording you used twice in this piece stating that "the two had sex" connotes consent. A child is unable to consent to sex with an adult. This wording minimizes the crime and does a great disservice to children and victims of child sex abuse and rape. Please call it what it is: CHILD RAPE.

Why is our judicial system so stymied as to stopping this type of thing? Get those castration chemicals out, and start dosing up the sex offenders! GEEZ! Either that - or get the operating theater going at the prison, where all the perps can see how the full castration process is done and do it LIVE! STOP with the kid banging! It's not the kids' faults! It's the adult population that fails to stop the whole process!!!

RAPE needs to be cleaned from the face of the earth and a concept and a reality TOTALLY,  FOREVER. .  You cannot really truly be against rape if you are still holding it as a viable behavior under certain conditions. That is what happens in war, too, to the enemies, but it does not make it right. Two wrongs don't make a right. There are plenty of realistic ways to incarcerate a person into the dept. of CORRECTIONS for penalty and rehabilitation or continued imprisonment. Being raped in prison makes for really messed up parolees coming back out to join us and I don't want that, and neither do you.
