Dog helps family escape house fire
OAK GROVE, Ore. – A family escaped a house fire in Oak Grove Monday night after their dog woke them up to let them know something was wrong.
Julie Cosner said her dog Fullby was out in the back yard for the night and he frantically scratched at the back door to wake the family up just after 10 p.m.
“I ran to the back door and he was scratching at it and I saw the flames behind him,” said Cosner.
Fullby escaped the fire with the Cosners, but they said their other dog died in the fire.
“We had another Mini Australian Shepherd and he died,” said Cosner. “He didn’t come out. He was freaked out and he ran into the bedroom.”
The fire started at a wood pile in the back yard and spread to the house. Firefighters said the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived. They also found a power line down.
Firefighters said the home had working smoke detectors, but the family discovered the fire before any smoke entered the home.
The house and two cars were destroyed.
Good dog special treat for you.
I know the family and just wanted to make a correction that the dog's name is actually Colby.
Oh Man, I wonder how the lines went down, I am sorry for the Families loss of the Mini Australian Shepard These are wise animals and very loyal to family.
I remember Katy Our German Shepard. We kids were using a fish tank lamp to read a book under the covers, we had set the lamp down on the floor pillow and blankets covered it, Katy went into action...Woke mom and dad up..the smoke alarm failed..We it was later discovered that the sensor in the detector was bad Kudos to Katy and Gary Keeny with Cowlitz 2 fire and rescue..(Now retired).
Gotta love "Man's best friend" when he is really watching out for you. Give that dog a good soup bone!
Maybe an electrical cord left plugged in out by the wood pile, someone might have left it where they last used it figuring they would be back to use it again soon, but not soon enough. My guess is as good as any.
So, was the power line down before the fire, and did it spark the woodpile? Regardless, it sounds like Fullby is a real hero!
It takes me a long time to get my fireplace going! How do you set a woodpile on fire with just sparks?
Australian Shepherds are the best dogs, if a little crazy at times. Good dog!
@Morgan/Wilson2012 LOL you can say that again, and when they want something..They have a way of bugging you ...and when board they will invent there own games lol. We have had nothing but Ausies for the last few years. I am not saying that any other dog isn't good any dog is a great dog..But we jsut prefer the Aussies..eh they are a bit hyper. Thankfully, ours is half lab.
@lee986321  @Morgan/Wilson2012 I had an Australian shepherd for 14 years and, though I miss all of my dogs that have passed on, I miss the Aussie the most. She was so intelligent-she learned words we never taught her. If you even said the word "walk" she'd go get the leash. They were also considered sacred by Native Americans; I understand why.
@Morgan/Wilson2012 Yes!  Love ours, who was a rescue.  So funny, she can't walk across the hardwood floors without biffing it, but she managed to get up on the roof and walk around just fine.
@Emi-Lynn Sounds about right. I don't have children, but if I did, an Aussie would be their first dog. Every Aussie raised around children (in my experience) is a relentless protector and extremely loving of their kids. And kittens, for some reason.
WTG, Fullby! Â Seems the outcome might have been different if Fullby hadn't been on the job. Â Best wishes to the Cosner family as they regroup and rebuild their lives.
