Driver smashes pickup truck into Lake Oswego post office

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. - A postal worker was injured Monday morning when a small pickup truck smashed through the front of a Lake Oswego post office building.
The incident tool place just before 10 a.m. and the Lake Oswego Fire Department said a mail carrier was "slightly injured" when a sorting rack fell on her during the crash.
She was taken to the hospital by a co-worker to get checked out, firefighters said.
Firefighters said the driver was pulling into a parking spot and did not stop. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time according to firefighters.
The structure of the post office building was not compromised and postal officials were working on getting the damaged section of wall boarded up after the crash.
The last time this happened in our town it was a kid that had just gotten his drivers license that day...Â
Time for remolding for Lake Oswego Post Office. It's old building. Hope the post worker will be okay.
I'm not sticking up for elderly drivers or anyone that may have pushed on the gas pedal instead of the brake, but, I have noticed in my cars and in many others, that these two pedals seem closer together than they used to. I can step on both with one foot and have numerous times. I don't remember doing that years ago.   So, question? Are they closer together? If so, the fix should be somewhat easy.
"Firefighters said the driver was pulling into a parking spot and did not stop. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time according to firefighters.'
Â
Doesn't the first sentence answer the second sentence?
Interesting how little info there is about this incident. Wonder if it will be updated?  Looks like a decent curb before the, er, what used to be a window.  Some make the asumption this was an elderly driver.   Must be tough getting up there in years, for sure.  I drive to and fro in a company van for a living and I am constantly amazed by the things I see young inexperienced drivers doing, or not doing.  Insurance rates for the elderly must be very high.

Â
Seems like the cause of the crash was determined in the first sentence. Doh!
And the driver of the truck is...?
 @washcomom ...darned lucky they didn't kill or seriously mame someone
Â
 @SrianB Maim, even.
 @Jumpin' Jehosophat Auntie Mame?  Mamie Eisenhower?  Remember the Maim?  <---oops.
Just another incident of an elderly driver (I suspect)..."I thought it was the brakes." Â How many of these need to occur or until there is a death for some changes to take place regarding the elderly and driving. Â I know, there are plenty of elderly folks out there (my parents included) who are still as sharp as a tack and can still get it done behind the wheel...With that being said..I'm not an expert on DMV's requirements or age limit...but as an officer, I sent my share of elderly folks for a re-test after an accident and even in one case...I thought I had a drunk driver behind the wheel..(It was pretty bad driving) and it ended up being a little old lady who could barely see over the dash. Â This is one subject I take personal and will always have a personal opinion towards....I lost my brother at the age of 18 when an elderly driver crashed into our car when I was a kid....so, I do take this subject very seriously.
@PD1202Â My condolences for the loss of your brother.
Â
I dreaded the day when I would have to take the keys from my father who was never easy to reason with. Fortunately, since he always insisted on driving cars with standard transmissions, two burned out clutches within three months was enough to convince him without me having to say a word.
 @HenryBowman Thank you...
I too regret that day when I tell my parents it's time to hand em' over....especially my Mom...stubborn.
 @PD1202 Some of us might have a stubborn streak...or so I've heard.  Oooo -- goosebumps -- the phrase "from my cold dead hands..." comes to mind.  That'll be me with the car keys.  =/
 @HenryBowman I inherited the car my father drove the last years of his driving life. I'd have been better off, financially, if I'd bought a new compact! He did take marvelous care of the car, as far as taking it in for repair and maintenance , , , ,
but he was a two-foot driver and the car was/is an automatic.
We paid more in repair of the whole brake system than the car is worth.
Â
Fortunately, my 90-year-old mum-in-law gave up her keys voluntarily when she turned 72.
Isn't it a Federal offense to attack a government building with a deadly weapon?
 @Icarus I believe you are correct....if the intent was there...
This would be news if the Driver did this intentionally..ya know..like because he got poor service at the counter and maybe got some grumpy frumpy gal with an attitude who wouldn't lift a finger to provide service like..ya know..the kind we expect at retail businesses. But we all know the chances of something like that happening at a US Post Office are pretty slim..right?
 @KillsGermsOnContact Right!
... minding my own business when that post office jumped right out in front of me!
The drive-through mail box slot must have been out of commission?
Cause of crash was someone didn't know the fat pedal is for slow, and the skinny pedal is for go.
Just one more reason to increase postal rates.
This better not hold up my regular junk mail delivery!
 @estrus You wouldn't be so lucky!

 @Mike Smith Well..that's what this comment page is for, right?  If you don't want to comment...then, read it..and move along.
LOL, you just did!
The cause of the crash is human error!
