Electric wheelchair sparks fire in Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, Ore. – An electric wheelchair sparked a fire at an apartment complex in Hillsboro early Thursday morning.
The woman who lived at the apartment where the fire started was treated for smoke inhalation and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Hillsboro Fire and Rescue spokesman Bruce Montgomery said.
"She could smell smoke ands he wasn't sure if it was incense or what it was," said fire investigator Martin Stapleton. She "heard like a zapping sound and then all of a sudden the flames. Poof, there's flames."
Firefighters were called to the Rolling Green Apartments on SE 44th Avenue around 12:30 a.m. They found smoke coming from a second-floor window when they arrived.
The automatic sprinkler system in the building had extinguished the fire, but firefighters still went apartment to apartment to make sure nobody else was injured.
The woman in the apartment where the fire started managed to pull an emergency alarm when the fire started that set off the sprinklers.
"The good thing is the sprinkler system they had in the unit was able to keep the fire in check," Stapleton said.
In all, six apartments were damaged on the first and second floor of the building. The first apartment suffered fire damage, while the rest had damage from smoke and water.
A chaplain from the fire department worked with a local home care facility to provide shelter for residents of the damaged apartments, Montgomery said.
The apartment’s owner said the 24-unit complex is designed to help people with disabilities live independently, although it is not a care facility.
The building was built with special walls that can resist flames for several hours and managers had emergency evacuation routes in place.
"We go above and beyond to make sure our residents feel safe," said manager Reid Jackson.
So was she sitting in it at the time?
@badcat No she wasn't. i live in rolling green. she was in bed luckily when the sparks and fire happened. she was lucky to be some what mobile to get out of bed. she is currently in the hospital and is fine. the apartments on the other hand are not so lucky.
@AtrophyAnnie Thanks for your response, and I'm very glad she wasn't in the chair when the fire started! I hope all of your friends & neighbors are hanging in there. Although it's wonderful that no one was seriously injured, I know there must have been some photographs and other treasured possessions lost. My sincere sympathies.
This is why we need to ban all wheel chairs now! In the wrong hands, this chair could have killed the whole apt building!
@stinger139 ban all wheel chairs???? seriously what are they suppose to do then crawl or lay in bed till they die from infection.....dumb ass people and ther comments...really what should happen is the state not charge more than these people can pay to keep there wheel chairs in good condition, instead they are forced to have these piece of craps wheel chairs they are stuck with ...
@Morgan Evans  @stinger139 You mean the same state that probably paid for them in the 1st place? Most of the ones I see have simply logged too many miles in the "Snacky Cake" aisle.
Or they could grossly overweight because what put them in the wheelchair in the first place also limits their ability to exercise.
@nostromo @Morgan Evans @stinger139 nostromo most of the people i know, read 'who live in my building' are para and quadriplegic and don't really leave their apartments. i am sure you probably see a lot of heavier people in their chairs because plain and simply most people with severe disabilities really don't go out in public much.
@Morgan Evans Morgan, meet sarcasm. Sarcasm, meet Morgan. :)
Those things have pretty powerful batteries, my dad had one. We transported him across the country and I met them at the airport, I had "get electric wheel chair to car" duty, so I sat in it and drove it (Dad went by hired ambulance). The look of pity on peoples faces shook me a bit, I didn't have the heart to tell them I was just moving the thing and I was not handicapped. Kind of like some people will put on fat suits to see how the world treats them, interesting if short experience.
@deejm2112  "...people will put on fat suits to see how the world treats them..." And THAT will be my explanation when I return to work after the holidays.
Â
Co-worker: "Looks like you really enjoyed your holiday meals."
HankBowman: "Nope. I'm just wearing a fat suit. Isn't there something in the employee handbook about commenting on the weight of your co-workers?"
Â
In the mean time, I think I'll have another plate of Christmas cookies.
"Isn't there something in the employee handbook about commenting on the weight of your co-workers?"
Â
Nope. Fat people are one of the few people groups left that you can still tease, harass, and discriminate against.
Someone trying to dragrace?
Wow.....those things must be more high powered than I thought !!!!!
 @Rob C 503Â
You can weld with them. Don't underestimate the power in a battery.
Granny, I TOLD you to quit hotrodding in that thing, now look at the mess we got!!
Batteries, the most underdeveloped product of the industrial world.
The batteries in those things can be used to weld steel. And they are supposed to have fuses to prevent overload that would cause this type of thing.
Â
I am guessing that someone screwed with it and by passed the safety systems.
 @RalphCramden  Tim Taylor?
