Bridge reopens after natural gas leak on Sauvie Island

PORTLAND, Ore. – A natural gas leak that started a fire forced an evacuation on Sauvie Island early Friday morning.

Crews evacuated residents within a quarter-mile of the leak along Northwest Gillihan Road, according to Lt. Steve Alexander with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

"The leak to the Northwest Williams Gas Pipeline was caused by a faulty valve release which started a fire," said Mike Pullen with Multnomah County.

The Sauvie Island Bridge was closed.

The Scappoose School District announced the Sauvie Island Academy was closed because no students could ride school buses to school due to the bridge closure.

The gas leak was shut off and the fire was extinguished. The bridge reopened at around 7:20 a.m.
