Family fights back after handyman attacks them
HAMLET, Ore. - A terrorized family teamed up Wednesday morning to take down their handyman who was armed with a knife and a gun.
Kenneth Moore reportedly barged into the Cannons' home, stabbed them with a knife and held them hostage.
The family also says Moore pointed a gun at them and pulled the trigger 10 times. Thankfully, it jammed.
"He just jumped on top of me and started stabbing me," said Heather Cannon who is disabled. It took her 11-year-old daughter and her mom, Jan, to tackle Moore.
"His face changed and his eyes were black, and he didn't care," Jan said.
Heather grabbed her gun to protect her family.
"I struggled with him," she said. "I kept my thumb on the safety for several minutes, wrestling with him and then he got it and pulled the trigger toward my head, and it jammed."
"I heard the click. It misfired," Jan said. "I just picked him up with his coat and his pants and threw him ... and then he grabs me and puts the gun to my throat. And all this time (saying) he's going to kill everybody, and I'm thinking, 'Yeah, you are.'"
Jan's husband, Russell, came up with the scheme to get Moore out of the house, offering to drive him far away, while Heather snuck away to call police.
"The last thing I see is him holding the gun to my husband, walking off into the pitch black," Jan said. "One minute later, we hear a gunshot in the parking lot. We think Russell's dead – there’s no more yelling."
Instead, Moore reportedly forced Russell to drive. Jan said her husband drove very slowly and deputies caught up with them.
Moore was arrested after a brief chase. He faces several charges, including attempted murder, kidnapping and assault.
