CLATSKANIE, Ore. – A 39-year-old Portland man died in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 30 Friday afternoon, state police said.
Police said the road was completely blocked for about an hour four miles west of Clatskanie following the crash.
According to Oregon State Police, they believe speed was a factor in the crash.
Sgt. Jason Linland said David Glatfelter was driving a 2003 Chevrolet pickup and was trying to pass a commercial vehicle when he lost control, crossed the oncoming lane and crashed into a ditch where the pickup rolled onto its top in a small waterway.
Bystanders stopped and got Glatfelter out of his pickup. But then he collapsed. Bystanders and then paramedics performed CPR on him, but he died at the scene.
Road conditions were snowy and icy but with some dry spots, police said.
OSP said Glatfelter was reportedly wearing a seat belt.
The crash happened just after noon.
