Fines for parking violations set to increase

The Multnomah Circuit Court announced it will boost rates for seven types of parking violations.
Specifically, the changes will boost the fines for:
- Not having a meter receipt from $45 to $60.
- Improper display of a meter receipt from $34 to $39.
- No front or rear plate from $55 to $80.
- Improperly parking in a permitted zone from $60 to $80.
- Parking in a carpool zone from $70 to $90.
- Parking in a truck loading zone from $65 to $90.
- Logging overtime in a truck loading zone from $65 to $90.
The city’s transportation department has sought ways to defray its deficits for the past several years
Circuit Court Administrator Doug Bray said the changes aim to put Portland’s fines in line with those levied in other cities.
Each new penalty amount is effective on Feb. 7 except for one. The truck loading-zone overtime fine increases take place July 1.

So lets just implement a "Death Penalty for parking violations policy " We would solve several issues here. Here's how it clould work:  * Tax paying citizen violates the law by going over their alloted time limit *parking enforcement observes the heinous crime committed  *waits for criminal to return  *notifes the public enemy/criminal of their crime *holds court right on the spot then executes sentence.  DEATH PENALTY! The guilty party is given one minute to say their prayers and given a choice lethal injection or just shot in the back of head (execution style). If the guilty party resists, the officer has right to bludgeon them to death with a hatchet.  The benefits of this new procedure are unmeaserable. Lets take a look at them: Parking enforement would not have to have expensive, unreliable technolgy with them,  just the basics: badge, gun, with bullets, hatchet, safty glasses, radio and body bags. Once sentence is carried out, officer calls in the location and the city crew removes the vehicle, to be sold later at public auction, the body bag to be disposed of a green manner. The cost of this would surely be covered by the sale of the vehicles leaving a hefty profit. As a bonus we would be rid of these public enemies. Do the math, more money for the city, quick turnover of parking spaces for the business. I see this as a win win for all, except the offending party who might rather be subjected to the slow painful extortion we have now in Portland now. Portland needs to better then other cities and standout.Â
I would contest a fine for "Improper display of a meter receipt" all the way since they did away with receipts with stickers. The window seal on our car is not tight enough to the glass on the inside to hold the ticket so I am forced to put it on the dash or risk it slipping down into the door.
Lets all just close our busnesses downtown before the city closes them for us
Using fines to pay for public services is wrong. Â I will no longer go down town, maybe the loss of income to downtown will wake them up. Â Use free parking at the malls and screw the city.
Who saw this comming raise thier hands? They are going to Tax and Fee us to death. I just wish they would cut spending. If they where to cut spending along with these tax and fee hikes then I would be OK with them. But every year they run into a shortage and every year they raise something to try and offset thier deficits.But yet every year is allways worse then the year before.

Now that Sammie uis gone the city can stop building bicycle paths and concentrate on more important priorities of those who pay the majority share of taxes and fees dedicated to roads. Of course government rarely proposes ways to be more efficient, and even more rarely successfully implements them. No, instead the city wants to continue to be unfriendly to downtown patrons by making it even more incconvenient to drive and park. Eight days in office and Hales has already presided over a fee increase. SSDD
Yea, the City of Portland is going to do whatever they think they can get away with just like Omama - I doubt seriously that the folks in Portlandia have ballocks enough to stand up to them so you get what you voted for. Just wait until your next paycheck when you have to start paying a 3.8% tax on your medical benefits to help pay for OmamaCare that you all thought was free...
Several comments come to mind, I shall only offer two. 1) Portland is seeking to be on TV again with Parking Wars. 2) what about all of us who have handicapped Plaques, Now how to extract $ from the handicapped?
 @Watch This Space just because a person is handicapped, doesn't mean they are dirt poor, to make an assumption like that is ignorant.Â
Wow, not this again.  The city forced public transit projects down the throats of its citizens without a vote; the entire system can't support itself because it was based on false premises and artificially supported with federal money. Â
Â
So what's the solution? Â Soak automobile drivers even more to get them to join the 12% of Portlanders that actually use public transit.

Â
So will the excess money collected be donated to charity or used to fund retired city workers pensions?
All this is, is another byproduct of Obama's ideology. Now take a breath before you blow, that's better, wind down and just pay attention. Obama's plan is to redistribute wealth as quickly and in some cases indiscreetly as necessary. As Obama makes more and more requirements on the Governors and mayors etc...,they then need to find every way possible to pass the buck, by whatever means possible. Not only does our local government need to meet Obama's spending requirements, they also, most importantly need to keep all of their promises to the Unions. That means keeping up all of the wages, benefits, PERS, cost of living raises etc.... And if they have to get the money from parking tickets and every other bs fine they can come up with, they will. Can't let the Unions down. No siree Bob.
 @last boyscoutÂ
Â
yes, Obama is like God; omnipresent and active in all the details and certainly out to stick it to everybody. Halleluiah; Preach it boyscout and we'll all testify!
@Icarus @last boyscout   If you fly too close to the sun your wings will melt
 @last boyscout Wow.
 @Festivus ...and the rest of my more liberal "friends", OK, the Obama reference was a big stretch, but the rest is true.
 @Festivus Something tells me he's holding back a bit.
@last boyscout  No its another way to see what kind of loosers run Portland. My suggestion  is from Lars make the place a state park. idiots Â
Yet another reason to not go downtown!!!
 @FreedomRocks My thoughts exactly. Unless of course I want to do some panhandling OMG.
 @special effects Do not forget your plastic bucket to sit on and a goobered-up sign along with some retro clothing, OK?? That is if you can even find a vacant space and not have to fight for it...
It's all part of Portland's master plan to make down town as vehicle un-friendly as possible, while at the same time turning a blind eye to bicyclists who blow through stop signs and stop lights. A double standard in downtown.
Good lord! Who dresses you people( parking whiners) in the morning? You make parking a car in downtown seem like it's harder than finding the Higgs-Boson Particle! A 16 year old girl can do it while updating Facebook, texting her friends, and rocking out to Ke$ha, I'm pretty sure most on here can figure out how to avoid tickets. Can you?
Anyone dumb enough to go into Portland deserves a ticket and a trip to a shrink. Â
What is the fine for an out of order parking tag dispenser going to be?
Â
and how much did the occupiers pay for the overtime of the cops, clean up of the parks and lost business revenue that occured over the course of  2-3 months?
Â
i have a "hunch" that the city burned more cash in-front of tax payers during the support of the occutards during this time than this increase in parking fines will ever cover......
Â
Â
Â
Â
Just think of all the walkers, train riders, cyclists, and bus riders that won't face any of these problems....now hate on them.
So, why do you people even go downtown? You have to go there to get drunk? There is nothing you can buy in downtown Portland that you can't find elsewhere closer to home.
 @stinger139 Because they want to?
Â
There are plenty of things to do in downtown that don't involve shopping that you actually can't find easily anywhere else.
Â
But I do so love an argument that boils down to "I would never do something, why is everyone else such an idiot?"
"No front or rear plate from $55 to $80." Â (from the story)
Â
I'm guessing they're referring to license plates on the car, correct? Â Â When did license plates get to be "parking violations"..? Â Â Â
Just curious... Â
@margay1 ......got to be a parking violation when the city of Portland could make money on it ?
 @margay1 I got hit for this "user fee" for the right to park in the Pearl a few years back. I recall it was $35. Did not appreciate that little gift.
 @browntown ~  They charge  "user fees" to park in the Pearl District..?  Hmm...never heard of that one before - anywhere..!  Guess their parking spots must be really special, huh?  Â
Every time I think I've heard the "most ridiculous" thing that gov't can come up with, something else comes right along that beats it..! Â :-)
 @cpt.icemanÂ
But wouldn't your economy suffer if tourists couldn't park and spend their money? Everything has a cost in one form or another.
Thats what I said. But the reason they give is it would remove the parking for the out of towners.. If you ever come to tillamook pay attention to the parking signs.. It's sickening...
 @cpt.iceman Why can't the people of Tillamook use their own dang streets 24/7? That sounds illegal.
Where I live you can NOT park anywhere down town durring the hours of 8am-5pm if you are( a Residant,Employee or Employer). This is what our signs say that are all over Tillamook Or.If they run you're car annd it comes back with a Tillamook add. then they can Ticket you and or tow you're car. What makes me mad is that we pay the Taxes not the people who drive through............
@margay1 What if the car is from AZ where a front plate is not required? Considering the IQ level of the leaders my guess it will get towed.Â
 @margay1Â
Â
During the last Police Union Employment Contract negotiations.
 @margay1 Make sure your tags are current as well, because they will also ticket you for that!
@A74R1 @margay1 and check once and a while to make sure your tags are there. We had someone going around the neighborhood not to long ago taking and trying to take off tags
 @margay1 Probably about the same time the police force decided to stop enforcing every traffic violation in the book except speeding.
My friends truck got hit one night, person obviously drove off taking his front bumper down the street with him. He awoke to a messed up jeep and a parking ticket for no plate. His defense was he's plate was still attached.... It was just 2 blocks away. Don't know the outcome.
Hilarious story jeepers!
This city continues to come up with reasons for me to avoid it, and damned few for me to venture downtown. Keep up the good work, and downtown businesses will evaporate.
 @AltaziÂ
I'm not sure that is accurate. Businesses depend on turnover and people who overpark their meter are taking up a space another customer could use. Also, many stores and most businesses will validate parking for an hour or two so there is little incentive to park on the street and not in a garage.
Â
I think a lot of the tickets go to people who work downtown and plug the meters all day.
 @Altazi Why?  A smart enough guy like you ought to be able to figure out how to park in a parking space without getting a ticket.  THIS is the reason you don't want to go downtown?  Color me incredulous. Â
Â
I was downtown for 5 hours on Sunday and it cost me 6 bucks to park in a garage for the whole day.
Â
 @Festivus  @AltaziÂ
Â
I went out to eat, to places for my kid to play, eat again, shopping, more fun with the kid, more eating.
Â
Paid $0 in parking.
Â
but then I didn't waste my time downtown.
Â
With more choices, lower prices and nicer people elsewhere, only the foolish would then also pay for parking to go downtown.
Â
The purpose of parking fines is to maintain the parking system. But the system has been poorly managed for so long that even these increases won't cover the costs.
Â
You can have downtown. I will save my $6. I can get 6 rides on the carousel or Farris wheel with that money, a much better use.
Â
Â
Â
 @FreedomRocks  @Repoman  @Festivus  @Altazi Lots of places anymore, unfortunately.
 @Repoman  @Festivus  @Altazi Ya but you completely missed out on the pan handlers and street people begging for your money and making you worry about the safety of your family. Where else can you get that but downtown Portland!!!
 @Repoman  @Altazi If I'm going to see "The Book of Mormon" at the Keller, I have to go downtown.  Likewise for music and dancing at the Schnitz, or the Portland Art museum, or Powell's, or Saturday Market or to see the Timbers or...
Â
So I'll keep deciding where to spend my time, but thanks for the tips. Â Until I changed employers, my Tri-met pass was company subsidized. Â For any day trip, that's still the best way to fly.
