CENTRALIA, Wash. - Residents in downtown Centralia, Wash., had to flee from an apartment building after a fire was spotted in the structure at about 2 a.m., according to The Centralia Chronicle.

Investigators said a passerby saw smoke and ran inside the building to warn the occupants. Everyone in the building made it out safely.

Firefighters said the "Dr. Matz" building at S. Tower Avenue and W. Main Street was badly damaged by the fire. Crews worked into the morning to put out the fire.

The building,  which dates from the 1880s according to The Chronicle, sustained extensive damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
