Firefighters battle fire at Muslim center, no indication intentionally set

PORTLAND, Ore. – A fire at the Muslim Community Center on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Thursday may have been caused by burning incense, according to witnesses.

The fire forced firefighters to close the road to traffic for a short time while they battled the blaze just south of Failing Street. Southbound traffic was still closed at 6 p.m.

The fire started about 4:45 p.m.

Fire officials have not announced an official cause for the fire, but witnesses told KATU News that incense burning in the back of the building caught some curtains on fire and then other things.

There were a handful of people inside at the time of the fire. They all got out safely. There have been no reports of injuries.

There appears to be no indication that the fire was intentionally set but firefighters are still investigating.
