PORTLAND, Ore. -- One of the four Americans recently killed in the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Libya this week was a Portland native.
Officials at the State Department identified Tyrone Woods as one of the casualties in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya on Tuesday.
Woods' mother Cheryl Bennett, who was in the middle of packing Thursday night to go to Washington D.C., said her son was a 1989 Oregon City High School graduate. He went into the Navy a year later and became a SEAL and spent a 20-year career there before retiring in 2010.
Woods recently lived in the San Diego area with his wife, Dr. Dorothy Narvaez-Woods, a dentist in La Jolla, Calif. He also had two children with his ex-wife. Bennett said her son "thrived on adrenaline and excitement and danger. Anytime he could jump out of a plane, whether it was at 15,000 feet or 30,000 feet, it didn’t matter.”
Bennett also said her son was not only a "stellar SEAL," but he was a quiet person.
“He went out and he just got the job done with his team, who was his family,” she said.
Tyrone S. Woods - "Rone" - we thank you for your 2 decades in uniform. Our hearts are with your wife, Dorothy, and your three sons.

Bennett went on to say he took his job seriously. Since 2010, Woods protected American diplomatic personnel in posts from Central America to the Middle East. It was a long way from when he first realized he wanted to join the Navy.
“I remember he told me, 'Mom, you know what? I’m not just going to be another barnacle scraper -- I’m trying out for the Navy SEALs,” Bennett said.
Woods went through what is commonly referred to in the Navy as "hell week" twice. He was injured during the first time, but he told his leaders he could go on. He did so well that they let him go through again.
Prior to going to Oregon City High School, Woods, who grew up with people telling him he looked like actor Val Kilmer, went to Sellwood Middle School and was born at Woodland Park Hospital.
“He was 8 pounds, 11 ounces -- a blond, fuzzy-haired little baby that I wanted more than anything in the world," Bennett said.
Ed Burton, the former wrestling coach at Oregon City High School, coached Woods. He even gave Woods a ride home from practice on occasion and got to know Woods well. Burton said Bennett was "very active" in Woods' education and worried about him and that Woods was "an intense kid (and) wrestling was perfect for him, but he never said much."
Burton was obviously saddened when he heard the news about Woods.
"When I first heard the news and got through the shock and disappointment, my first recollection would be he probably died helping somebody," he said. "That would have been typical of him."
The interesting part was that Woods wasn't a fantastic wrestler. He never won a district championship, but his determination proved to be formidable.
"(He) always worked his way into starting lineup in and out and wrestled the other kids tough in practice," Burton said. "He was a good kid ... I really felt bad for his mom because she put so much into his education and life. She would do anything for him and he was good to her. He respected his mom and was a good kid."
Burton said joining the Navy was likely a good way to go for Woods because if we would've gone to college, he would have had to work his way through his schooling in order to afford it.
"The military was a great place for him and he kind of thrived on that mentality he became a spit-and-polish kid," he said.
I actually met Ty back in 1996 in Okinawa Japan. He really did love adrenaline, he loved what he did and it showed. We went out to a place called the Banyan Tree and had a few beers. I was shocked to see it was the same guy but not surprised. May God Bless You and your Family.
It's a shame when anyone has to die because of religious stupidity. This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with intolerance and ignorance.
Obama's Mideast policy goes up in flames, while he's busy campaigning, making more promises that he'll never keep.
@Hellbilly There are no politicians who don't do that. Politics is a game of rhetoric and promises. If anyone's to blame, it's those who swallow the bait every 4 years, regardless of who the candidates are.
I wonder if Obama even let the Embassies know about the uprisings when he learned of them...or did he leave them out on a limb to be dragged throught the streets?  The pictures of the mobs running throught the streets dragging the bodies appeared across the Nation - but not in Portland papers and TV coverage.  People need to know Obama is not good for this Nation or for them...
First of all, Obama was not caught by surprise. He had 48 hoursâ notice that the embassy attack was planned, and did "nothing"! (4 soldiers in that country, 2 per shift, really)??? Second, It was 9/11 and has been proven it was a celebration by Muslims of the attacks of 9/11 and Obama does nothing. Thanks Obama for showing the undecided how worthless you are!!! We now know what many suspected all along, and that is Hillary Clinton is the worse secretary of state in history, unless she had to say what Obama told her to say and I think that was the case - all to gain in the polls and win in Nov. And now at least four people are dead - and that is all we know so far. Â I'm sure there are more...Obama has failed yet again. And what is his answer today to embassies being attacked all over the middle East (which this paper has failed to report) He goes to a $40,000 per plate fundraiser. Enjoy the meal Obama, we are going to put you out of office very soon! Â Only thing Obama cares about is himself, he has not a shred of concern about America....
Â
So when does your campaign for president begin? It's amazing how you know so much more than the government, or perhaps it's more likely that you simply read things and regurgitate that which sounds good to you and your anti-Obama crusade. Yada, yada, yada.
@Mikey ..with good reason...it's people like you that I hope live long enough to remember back when life was good...wise up.  It is really hard to believe we have people in this country unable to think for themselves...yeah, letâs see...85% of the Muslims are illiterate so they can't read the Koran so they only know what the Imam and Clerics tell them. The recent raid was so-ordinated by an Islamic organization as it happened too quickly and was too well organized to be anything else but a planned assignation. Who you trying to kid. Like a good friend told me. They don't want to convert you...they want to kill your ***...they don't want you in this world. Take your head out of your *** and wake up.  How long before you are just one of the mob climbing the walls?

@deejm2112 @KHEB wow.............talk about drinking the koolaid!..........Thank a vet for your ability to have diarea of the mouth!
@rem417  @deejm2112  @KHEB Hey, I'm not making any assumptions but I'm not going to carry on this debate here because I don't thinks it's appropriate anymore.
Â
RIPÂ Tyrone.
@deejm2112 ...When we get warnings 48 hours ahead, that there is going to be trouble at an embassy, maybe some one should get the diplomats out and bring the Marines in (with live ammo). Maybe we could put Joe Biden in charge of that if he has finished figuring out how many jobs the stimulus saved.

@deejm2112 .. it is amazing the propaganda you've swilled, hook, line and sinker..oh my...Those ships should have been well on their way - not waiting until the attacks occurred...gees.  It might not have hurt if Obama had spent a little more time in the Oval Office...maybe even attending his briefings.  At least he didn't make it any worse by his idiotic policies because he did't know...give me a break...
@deejm2112 ..You think they didn't know which?...How naive...
Spying is AGAINSTÂ LIBYANÂ LAW!

This was such a senseless crime.
RIP Tyone Woods. Â
RiP Ty
Not to sound insensitive, but why is a SEAL at the embassy in the first place?
@molotovmouse Marines guard the BUILDING, "security personnel" guard the PEOPLE. (Although when Ha - Gees set off a bomb, it's a threat to both.) The State Department used to have a large "diplomat security personnel" detachment, but now that is mostly "contracted out."
Â
Chief Woods (USN/SEAL) was retired from the Navy, and was working for either the State Department or a contractor.
@molotovmouse It appears he had retired from the Navy and was a Special agent for the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), the State Departments version of the US Secret Service.
@Submariner  @molotovmouse Submariner: Great minds think alike.
@molotovmouse He was a Seal in the 1990's.  I would say that he moved up, into a position he was good at and was pleased to do.
@molotovmouse uh, perhaps for protection??  Why would that make you wonder?
@shewiz Isn't guarding embassies done by marines?
 @mjoh  @molotovmouse  @shewiz He WAS a Seal ... 23 years ago. Â
@molotovmouse @shewiz I had the same thought. Not to take away from the loss of this person, but I didn't know that Navy Seals protected embassies. I thought they were protected by marine's or other military personnel. Seals are trained for direct action towards specific targets. Maybe the young man was once a SEAL but became a different rank. I really don't knw.
Thankyou. You son gave his life for his country. As a mother of a once fuzzy haired pair of 5 lb twin boys, I cant imagine the pain of living in this world without them.. Your loss is not without great appreciation from this family and many others that read your story. I hope peace finds it way back into your heart soon.
I am very sorry for the lost of American lives. This movie thing is just a front for what has been planned for sometime as some of those with insight have said..........The US needs to make every effort to ID all of those involved in any manner whatsoever including their relatives and then FOREVER bar any of them from entering the US.....Yes folks they may try to enter thru say our southern border and create similar situations around the US.
