Gay couple attacked while walking pink poodle

HILLSBORO, Ore. – A pink poodle sparked what appeared to be a hate crime after a stranger stopped and got out of his car to attack a couple while screaming homophobic slurs.
It happened at 185th and Evergreen next to a busy strip mall with stores like Office Depot and Petco at about 3:30 p.m. Friday. It was why there were several witnesses when the victims said the attacker did a U-turn, got out of his car and went after them in the middle of a crosswalk in the middle of the day.
Hillsboro police said they arrested the suspect, 22-year-old George Allen Mason, Jr. (photo at right), at around 2 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Target store on NW Evergreen, not far from where the alleged attack happened.
David Beltier is happy to be alive.
"If I didn't hear all the other people honking, all the people seeing what was going on, he could have probably severely hurt me, maybe even killed me right there and then," he said Friday.
Beltier and his boyfriend, Jeremy Mark, were on a walk with their pink poodle "Beauty" – one of three colorful dogs dyed with Kool-Aid for Easter. Beltier said he dyed the dogs for fun.
But the fun with his poodle prompted profanities from a stranger who did a U-turn, got out of his car and began punching Beltier in the street.
"After that, he turns around, he goes back to his car, runs back to his car and brings out this long wrench-looking crowbar tool or something like that, and he comes back after me," Beltier said.
He said the man hit him in the arm and the back of the head.
"I just couldn't believe it," said Mark. "I was shouting at the guy to stop. There's no need for violence. There's nothing to provoke him. ... I was fearing for his life."
The man took off, but plenty of people were watching.
"One of the witnesses tried to block him in and got the license plate number for us and then another witness followed him," Mark said.
Police used that license plate number to track down Mason's 1997 Land Rover in the parking lot. Mason is a transient, according to police.
"I'm so grateful for the community," Beltier said. "If it wasn't for a lot of the witnesses and all the community people, it probably could have been really disastrous."
While police said it might be a good idea for his safety to take the dye out of his dogs' fur, Beltier said he doesn't want the attacker to win and have control over his life. He said he'll just let the dogs' colorful fur grow out on its own.
Police took Mason to the Washington County Jail. He faces charges of intimidation (2nd degree), assault (2nd degree), unlawful use of a weapon and reckless driving.
Officers also found Mason's wife, 23-year-old Saraya Gardner, in the car. Police cited Gardner for interfering with an officer because she was reluctant to cooperate. She was in the car during the attack, according to police.
I think it's a love triangle gone wrong.
This story has stupid written all over it. Â Stupid guys dye their poor dog PINK and are shocked when someone reacts stupidly to it....STUPID. Â I think these guys should be cited for animal cruelty, and stupidity......Yeah, like that's gonna happen....Too many stupid people making laws...Anyway, lots of stupid here. Â
portland is the capital of stupid!
I personally LOVE the pink poodle. Â People hate out of insecurities in themselves. Â I hope they continue to live as they want and don't have further troubles.
â@BentnWasted: Gay couple attacked while walking pink poodle: http://t.co/8Fa81SKEbv THEY HAVE NO RIGHTS THESE INFIDELS...
@EliteF1ghter Yeah, they do. The moron like you who attacked them is in jail on half-a-dozen serious charges, so watch it. @BentnWasted
â@BlazePhoenix_: I agree those individuals our morons, but don't worry I will carry my freedom of speech to destroy u infidels @BentnWastedâ
@EliteF1ghter You're calling someone else a "fag" from Twitter?  Oh, that's rich.
@EliteF1ghter Charming. "Infidels"? That's exactly what Al Qaeda calls Americans. All of you religious extremists are alike. @BentnWasted
PEOPLE LIKE THIS ARE SUCH PIGS. I WAS THRILLED TO KNOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY MADE AN EFFORT TO HELP THESE GUYS. IF I SAW SOMETHING LIKE THIS NO MATTER IF THEY WERE GAY, STRAIGHT, BLACK, HISPANIC ANYTHING...I WOULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO HELP THEM AS I WOULD IN ANY SITUATION LIKE THIS. IM ALWAYS DISGUSTED WHEN I SEE STUFF LIKE THIS AND NO ONE HELPS. I HAVE MY DOGS HAIR A LITTLE PINK ON TOP DOES THIS MEAN SOME JERK IS GOING TO ATTACK ME AND MY DAUGHTER CAUSE WE ARE OUT IF PUBLIC WALKING?? GOOD THINK I CARRY SEVERAL DIFFERENT FORMS OF "PROTECTION"Â EVERY TIME I GO OUT. I WOULD NEVER EVER WANT TO HAVE TO USE ANY OF THEM AND WOULD ONLY IF LIFE OR DEATH. BUT IF IT WAS THIS LOSER OR MY DAUGHTER YOU CAN BET YOURÂ Â *#$** THE LOSER WOULDNT BE WALKING AWAY & HE PROBABLY WOULD THINK TWICE NEXT TIME. I REALLY HOPE HE GETS JAIL TIME & A RECORD FOR THIS. & THE LOUSY EXCUSE FOR A WOMAN HE CALLS HIS WIFE WHAT CAN I SAY...BIG LOSER #2. GET AN EDUCATION & SOME CLASS. IF THAT WAS MY MAN HE WOULDNT HAVE EVEN GOTTEN OUT OF THE CAR & IF HE DID THE CROWBAR WOULD HAVE BEEN USED ON HIS SORRY EXCUSE FOR A BACKSIDE! I BETTER STOP NOW BEFORE I GO ON & ON......
@Kelli Thoren You realize that all that typing will probably be ignored, because most people don't like reading things in all caps.
I am so sorry, this is awful and breaks my heart the hate people have.
I am incensed that two innocent PERSONS walking peacefully with their pet were victimized. I could care less if they were "gay". They did not deserve any of this. I am relieved that people came to this couple's aid - and assisted the police in doing their job - and that George Mason, Jr was arrested  and placed into custody - and his wife who tried to interfere with it all - she was cited too. If ever a person needed to be removed from the streets and punished for this crime of cruel and sick choosing - it is George Mason, Jr. Â
Wonder how this young man had felt if these two men had just been walking the dog of their aged grandmother who just liked dying her dog pink? Parents need to educate their children on respect for others and not to use violence to voice their disagreements with others.
LOL. If some gay couple's pink dog is all this guy had to flip out about in this day and age I have serious concern for our education system. Gays are here like everybody else, they're going to get marriage with federal recognition and, whoever thinks guns are going anywhere anytime soon....you're too simple to be reading this right now. It's all going to come to pass, just bigoted people with too much time, not enough to do trying to ruffle somebody's feathers. Love for him to come talk to me about my pink dog (assuming I don't now go rent one).
March is paint your pitbull pink month
@Bert I would love to see that. I say why not pick a different color ever couple of months?!?!?
I firmly support gays and guns. Â In this case, the victim is perfectly justified in ending a bigot lifeform from our gene pool. Â
@Benjamin Schniffle Hot!
Are all pink poodles like Quiche Lorraine
I wonder if dyeing fur is against PETA?
oraise the perp for doing the work of ouir heavenly father,,,,,jesus s. christ. the son of god.
The dog's adorable! Insecure Mr. Mason and his wife are losers.
Why do people get so bent out of shape over a pink (or any non-natural colored) dog? It's unsweetened koolaid for pete's sake!Â
These particular dogs look happy, healthy and well loved.Â
Â
@AndyP I agree! The dogs look very well loved and cared for - The issue is the man who attacked an innocent person out walking his dog - regardless of the color or his sexual orientation, the act of violence is unwarranted. If I were a witness to this, I would have done just as many of the community members did and try to stop it. Glad everyone is ok.Â
@AndyPÂ Â
Dogs that have personality get more attention and dogs like attention. Everybody will pay attention to a pink dog. I put Marti Gras beads on my girlie dogs and they love it and they prance around because they know the beads make them just a little extra special and they know they will get more attention from everybody. Â
Letting the dogs wear beads was also a great way to meet the ladies...I'm a bit of a lesbian you know...and I hit on every skirt that stops to pet my pups.
@Agness P Weatherby - the dog drew the attention sought, so what is the problem
@Agness P Weatherby I'd hit on every skirt that would stop to pet my pup, too ;-)
@AndyPÂ Looks pissed off to me.
I'm sorry guys, the stupid people are big, baby bullies and don't want to ever grow into real adults. I hope you guys are okay, don't live in fear.Â
@twoeyes Dying a dog pink is a form of bullying. Guess they should grow up.
Isn't using kool-aid to dye animals a form of cruelty?
@theobserver Â
Are you a member of the K-9 liberation front? That's a thing now you know...
@Icarus @theobserver They look like a bunch of terrorists.
@theobserver It's only cruel when it's ingested... by anything.
I don't understand what would even compel someone to actually take the time to do a u-turn and start harassing strangers walking on the sidewalk. Can you say closet case? I bet he can't.
@s.c.h. Clearly having a pink dog can compel someone to do just that.
A sort of unreleated to this article though, can this forum be limited to one ot two comments per issue by one person? I mean getting through 25 comments from person A to person B, and another 25 comments from  B to A, in response and to sort out their differences is annoying.  The exchange of their phone numbers, or emails would work better, . I mean, I am interested in what the public think about any given issue but not at all in a few people sorting out their opinions out here in between themselfs.
@faith Even though KATU changed to Livefyre a few months back, this forum was formerly operated under IntenseDebate...because it's something of a debate forum.  That's why there are people here sorting out their opinions....this is exactly what you're saying your interested in:  what the public thinks about any given issue.
@Sundowner @faith It beats me. Enjoy yourself.
@Sundowner @tigressI have ascertained that you like burgundy.
@tigress Like it?  I'm a professional winer, but I'm not sure I spelled it right.  Speaking of burgundy things, I like pomegranate syrup on ice cream -- I make my own.  My son has a burgundy car he'd like to give away.  I have a burgundy sweatshirt that says "Organically Grown Company" on it.  What things do you have that are burgundy?  BTW, way back in the 70s I drank quite a bit of Gallo Hearty Burgundy, but I found the next morning my lips were stained a hint of burgundy AND I was hungover, so I gave it up. Â
@faith @Sundowner Hey Faith. Read any good books lately? I have. What's your favorite color? Mine's burgandy. Not red, not pink, but you know, burgandy. Like the wine. Do you like wine?
@Sundowner @faith Â
And, it frequently takes a few exchanges to tease out the absurdity of an angry comment and arrive at the correct comic tone.Â
@faith Me too.
@Sundowner @faith After look at the posts. I think this was about us. Now I feel like a dick.
@tigress @TreeWizard @faith I was being polite in my comment about IntenseDebate, Livefyre, blah, blah.  I really wanted to say, "Oh, new forum mommy, eh?"  See how nice I can be when I don't say things like that?  =)Â
@TreeWizard @Sundowner @faith I mean, why Faith would read hundreds of comments is beyond me. Am I right, Sundowner? How about you, Tree? Where the heck is the dreamy winged guy, because I want his opinion on this. I hate people who go completely off topic, because after all, there are RULES. Some people must not have anything better to do, right Faith? Incidentally, Faith, you sound fascinating. Tell me a little about yourself! I like pie, don't you?
@TreeWizard @Sundowner @faith Me too.
@TreeWizard Laughing out loud....
@faith I agree 100%.
