FAIRVIEW, Ore. -- Police in the Portland suburb of Fairview said they made an arrest in connection with the death of 10-year-old girl.

Police Chief Ken Johnson said the Fairview Police Department and the East Multnomah County Major Crimes Team are still investigating the death of the girl, identified as 10-year-old Miranda Crockett.
Police said Crockett died at the King's Garden Apartments on NE 207th. She was taken from the apartment complex by ambulance on Saturday.
Police have not said how she died.
On Monday, Johnson said officers arrested Chandra Ilene Rose, 34, in connection to the case. She faces two counts of criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment, police said.
Rose appeared in court Tuesday afternoon, where the judge increased her bail from $12,000 to $100,000. The judge also sealed court documents that outline why Rose was arrested in connection with Crockett's death.
Rose is the girlfriend of Crockett's father and has three children of her own. The children were placed in protective custody.
Neighbors who spoke with KATU News Tuesday said Crockett's father was heartbroken about his daughter's death.
"He came walking by and he was carrying, like, a little stuffed animal and a few things in his hands. He just looked out of it," said Mark Seibel, who works with Crockett's father. "And I said 'what's up? What's going on?' And he says 'Miranda passed away,' and I just said 'oh my God' and put my arms around him."
Police said Crockett's father was not at home Saturday when his daughter died.
"She was a beautiful little girl," said neighbor Angela Anderson. "She was so friendly. She's going to be missed."

KPTV has posted a statement from the father that sort of implys that something happened between Miranda and the other children in the home while Chandra slept. She was hard of hearing and the kids 'liked to take advantage of that'. I took from that statement that they liked to get into things while the mother slept. Miranda was found soaking wet and the father said she drowned. Poor thing. It would explain why Chandra wasn't arrested on murder. She should have been awake and monitoring what was going on in that apartment! How tragic!
How very sad.
Judging the appearance of the mother I think she was into drugs and thus the girl got into them Father isn't mentioned because he wasn't there probably. We will have to wait for medical examiners reports.
Chandra was NOT Miranda's mother! Miranda's mother gave up parental rights when Miranda was very little. Lives far away; Father had sole custody since. Chandra was live in girlfriend since summer. Because Im not clear of what info has been released (I live in AK), on going investigation, cannot say much. Father was not into drugs at all. Dont know for sure about Chandra or her 3 kids, but unlkely.Â
Â
From a picture on a new forum, you can tell someone is on drugs? I find that interesting actually. Can you perhaps tell what kind of drugs the woman "might" be on?
Until the police release information, I would imagine everyone will have to wait for the truth
@lee986321Â Â Based on the charges, and the low bail, it is doubtful that drugs were involved.
Â
There is surely a lot to the story that none of us has knowledge of.  Perhaps the kid was choking and the stepmom thought she was faking it.  Failure to render aid and seek medical attention would be considered criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment.  Just a thought.
Â
Â
It's disgusting that someone that hideously ugly is still alive and breathing while a beautiful little girl is dead. Good job picking your ho, dad. Why isn't his name listed?
What do you see when you step in front of a mirror? I find it kind of funny, that some commentors decide looks are what makes a person do good or bad. And they run around saying how ugly or hideous people are. I actually feel sorry for you.
@QuandoQuandoQuando Did you actually read the article?  "Police said Crockett's father was not at home Saturday when his daughter died."
Â
'Rose is the girlfriend of Crockett's father and has three children of her own. The children were placed in protective custody.'
@BarbWire Yes, I did actually read the article as it was originally written this morning. Did you happen to notice the article was just updated at 5:57? There was NO information about the father earlier. Before you jump all over someone for their comment here at KATU, you should check that first, as they commonly update and change their original stories.
@QuandoQuandoQuando Well given that most Americans are ugly should they also be killed? WTF has anyone's looks go to do with their punishment. Secondly you should not be so keen of killing people before we know what happened.
@terre08 Where did I say she should be killed for being ugly? Where did I say punishment should be based on a person's looks? Oh yeah, I didn't say that at all. I just mentioned that she is, in fact, hideous. And yes, I think if she caused the death of this little girl, she should be the one dead, not the innocent child. Sorry if I offended you, but my sympathy is ALWAYS with the child victims because this happens way too often. And the dad IS responsible for bringing this woman into his daughter's life.
@QuandoQuandoQuando Because it's possible he didn't do anything wrong?
That is just sickening and despicable.
Man, this just keeps getting worse. Did the father KNOW she was being mistreated? I bet he did, and he looked the other way. There is no way this could happen if Dad had put his daughter first in his life, not some bimbo. This is just so sad, I have a granddaughter who is ten and this breaks my heart.
First, let me say, my son LIVED for Miranda. Did not do drugs. I dont see what he saw in Chandra but enough, apparently, not to see what was happening.yet. I never met her as I live in Alaska. Cant say more; things still under investigation. We will miss our little Miranda.. Thanks Portland for caring...
@G. Crockett Thanks for sharing...may your heart and soul find peace and comfort.
Thank you most kindly.. still seems surrel.
Sometimes adults  disapline the way they learned on themselves.............
Fathers Girlfriend mistreating HIS child. I have seen so much of that. Step parent mistreating the step child. Had I found myself single while raising my Kids I would never have taken up with a man the whole while I had Kids at home.
@Yamhill354Â I have been a custodial stepmom for 8 yrs to 3 children. I have 2 of my own. Please don't think its all step parents. :(
This is a very sad story. Stepparent does not mean crazy abuser.
@Dava I am well aware that there are many step parents who view their steps as their own. And I congratulate them.
Â
The risk of not getting the GOOD ones is so high I would never have risk it. I have sons who love their steps just as they love their own. But one has the wife who is the step mother from hell.
@Dava  Well put, Dava. I have a Sig Other that is great with my kids. He steps up a lot of times when their dad doesn't. Â
The woman arrested was the dads girlfriend. My guess, there were illegal drugs in the house, and the little girl got into them, and they killed her. Just a guess. Criminal mistreatment, the woman didn't outright murder, but was negligent in the cause.Â
What a pretty little girl... and that's an infectious smile, for sure..! Â Â
So much not yet told here... maybe not even known yet... Â but age 10 is too young to have your life cut short, especially for reasons of neglectful or harmful treatment by an adult (or adults)... Â Â
Â
Rest in peace, Miranda...Â

@Tom dogboy Collins I drive by there alot also, on my way to work or visit parents in Portland, and at one time even considered getting an apartment there. It's always so clean and well-maintained...but then I began hearing things about it :( So, you can't tell just from the looks of a place what it's really like. Poor girl...I hope the book is thrown at that miscreant, low-life, poor excuse for a human :(
Rest in peace Miranda Crockett.
Is this a foster parent? Is this a neighbor? Is this a relative of the child? What is the connection?Â
Â
My heart breaks for the loss of a child, especially when they say endangerment, criminal mistreatment, why not add neglect? Failure to care for a child you are entrusted with is just wrong on so many levels. It will be nice to have the whole story, there are so many holes in this one. Poor little girl, no one can hurt her anymore. May she rest in peace now.
The loss of a child is so heart breaking. There are far too many questions to be answered yet. I'm saddened that this girl's life was cut so short. I hope the police can sort this out and hold accountable those responsible; it will not make up for the loss of this young lady, but I wish them success.
Please, lets not focus on the person arrested. Â Focus on the little girl who has died. Â Make a contribution to her funeral fund. Â Thanks
@Cindy Mertes For starters, there isn't anything written about a "funeral fund"...secondly, who are you to this family to ask that anyhow? Thirdly, are you making a dry, joke? I know we are always hearing about sending money when a tragedy happens...maybe we're getting jaded? Anyhow...I'm not really sure about your intentions.
Joke?  Really? http://igg.me/p/283291?a=1818598. Here's the link. Why would you think so lowly of other people? That is really sad. I feel sorry for you. Perhaps you are jaded. I was only commenting on the person who below who focused on the woman arrested.Â
 @Cindy Mertes http://www.nacvcb.org/,
@Cindy Mertes if the family needs help paying for the funeral they can get that help through a victims assistance program, such as the following http://www.nacvcb.org/, Â
@Cindy Mertes Huh? We don't even know who this little girl is. What happened. Who her family is. Should we just send a check to you, Cindy? Cause honestly, your comment sounds a bit too focused on the money and not at all on the child.
@Lips  @Cindy Mertes I agree Lips, Cindy does seem a little preoccupied with the money aspect. Â
Here is the mugshot of this delightful person.

@RalphCramden Thats a shockingly low bail for the charges.Â
@RalphCramden thanks. Why do you suppose the low bail?
Â
@Philip Marlowe The bail has to fit the charges. So far the charges are not that significant. If they add on more charges then expect the bail to go up.
@Philip Marlowe  @RalphCramden Quite possibly she was booked prior to the girl being pronounced dead. I wouldn't be surprised if additional charges will be following.
@Philip Marlowe  @RalphCramden Maybe she didn't kill-kill her. Maybe she mistreated her so badly, that the child committed suicide. =(
again folks, no drugs. Cant say much as investigation continues and I think it would be better for my son to speak when he feels up to it. How would you feel if your daughter (or for me, granddaughter) was murdered.. and everyone just assumes drug use? I cannot speak for Chandra..whom Iv never met.. but my son would have NOTHING to do with illegal drugs. If you want to get involved, send a contribution to help out on her funeral cost. If you can help out with only a couple bucks.. a small cup of coffee.. it would be greatly appreciated. http://www.indiegogo.com/mirandacrockett
Thank you all, especially for every contribution.
Miranda's Grandpa
@Just Me  @Lips  @Philip Marlowe  @RalphCramden JM... Hadn't considered that. Very possible as well. If the girl overdosed on some prescription medications. Although, if the woman was legally in possession of them, I doubt they would have arrested her. Unless there was a pretty obvious case of neglect, or due diligence in securing her medications.Â
Â
At the very least, the officers saw something in the home that led them to believe that it was an unfit environment for the deceased girl, and possibly caused her death. Two 'probable cause' charges to get her locked up, then they investigate and present the evidence to the District Attorney. In 48 hours, a determined guilty person can disappear pretty easily.Â
@MarkKpic It could also be that the child was highly allergic to cats and the step mother had a cat in the home. Right now...we don't know. The bail seems pretty low if there were illegal drugs involved. Plus the fact that there were no drug related charges.
@Lips  @Kachina  @RalphCramden Total spitball speculation, but given the charges (ORS 163.205 & reckless endangerment), and given the picture, I'm going to guess that drug manufacturing is involved.Â
Â
Probably locked her up on the minor charges so that she didn't run, and they'll play out the clock before bringing the rest of the charges.Â
@Kachina  @Lips  @Philip  @RalphCramden It is. This article is very vague as well. She doesn't seem to have any homicide charges, though. Weird.
@Lips @Philip Marlowe @RalphCramden Mistreatment is such a vague term, and can include all kinds of horrible things. It is just heartbreaking.
