Teen sentenced to 18 months for attempted child abduction

PORTLAND, Ore. - A child abduction suspect who was caught after a girl's mother took a 2x4 to him back in August asked for forgiveness during a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect, who was 17 years old at the time, pleaded no contest to attempted kidnapping, and read a letter to the girl's mother. He was sentenced to 18 months.
"Even though I don't remember anything, I felt horrible for what I did to your daughter," he said. "I was under the influence of drugs. I lost my mind.
"I have all the time in the world to think about the mistakes I have made," he said. "So please forgive me for what I did."
KATU News reported in the August that police credited quick action by the girl's mother, Antoinette Robinson, and neighbors who helped her capture the suspect.
Robinson said she became concerned when she heard muffled screams from Xavieria, her 6-year-old daughter. The screams were coming from an area where children were playing.
"She was outside playing with her friend, right by the bush, by the front door and I’m sitting there watching TV, and I thought I heard her call me," Robinson told KATU. "When I looked I saw a man with his hand around her mouth and her body.”
Robinson said the suspect was trying to pull Xavieria into the bushes.
"He put his hand over me, and then he pushed me in the bushes and then my mom came out," said Xavieria. "I thought he was going to take me."
But mom jumped into action and ran at the suspect.
"Motherly instincts. I just got up and socked him in the face and then he let her go," she said. "I went to hit him again and he grabbed my hand and rolled down the hill a little bit, then I got on top of him and started socking him in the face.”
Officers later told her that the suspect was high on mushrooms, Robinson said.
Neighbors heard the scuffle and came to Robinson's aid. She hopped in a car to chase the boy as other neighbors followed him on foot, police said.
"I got out of the car and hit him with a 2x4 and I broke that over him and he took off again," Robinson said. "We’re all chasing him again and good citizens blocked him in somebody’s yard, and being mad, I just stepped in his face.”
Police said the attempted abduction happened near 169th Avenue and Lafayette Street in Southeast Portland. The suspect was arrested near SE 164th and Division.
Surveillance video captured the take-down. It shows the suspect attempting to run away. He trips near a pickup truck and then is surrounded by neighbors who pin him against the truck. At least one of them kicks the suspect a couple times.
Robinson said her family lives in the St. Johns area but was in Southeast Portland for a barbecue.
The Portland Police Bureau would like to remind parents to talk to their children about "stranger danger" to keep them safe. Some excellent tips by Dr. Robin F. Goodman about "stranger danger" are available by clicking here.
You can't get any better rehab than he has had already, nothing like a Mom and a 2x4 to make him change the way he thinks about children. Good job Mom.
18 months hell ..... should have been 18 years followed by castration! (By a very rusty hatchet - the mother gets the first wack!)
Wow, the guy only gets 18 months for a stranger-to-stranger abduction of a child??
The more severe punishment was the beat-down he got at the hands of the neighbors.. Hallelujah!
Since she chased and assulted him after he clearly fled, does she get to get charged with attempted vehicular homicide, or felony assult like the homeowner who shot the "prowler"?
She may have been merely trying to "detain" him for the police. And he actually did a crime, as opposed to the so-called prowler who, as far as we know, didn't do anything other than be outside at 4am.
Detaining is one thing. Assaulting the bejeebers out of someone is a whole nother thing. I certainly understand the mob mentality here, but I'm not sure it's legal. Kind of surprised charges weren't pressed against her and her "posse".
Wrong gender to be a mom. However, I didn't say I wouldn't do the same thing. Just pointing out that my surprise that there wasn't a price to pay in this day & age for the vigilante justice.
@OSUx2  Not a mom I guess. I don't know of any mother who not do the exact same thing. Try to take my baby as I watch? I don't think so. I'd say the guy was lucky to live. And of course its not legal.
I know many of you are thinking right now that the solution would be to ban mushrooms. But our constitution protects my right to bare mushrooms. Banning mushrooms isn't the solution. Mental health education and putting mushrooms everywhere is the solution. The only way to stop a bad mushroom trip is with a good mushroom trip. Please, you must understand this. If we cede our mushrooms to the government we will have lost our freedom.Â
Laughing at the sourpusses on here who have to find something wrong with a take down that didn't involve a gun.
@ormom What if he pulled a knife and stabbed the 2 of them? Could have easily happened. They are both lucky that he had no weapon, but good job mom.
@randomdude @ormom A mom (or a good dad, for that matter) will only be worried for their child. After the child is safe, the adreniline rush mixed with fear and anger will give courage that is substantial enough that the knife issue would not even dawn on them, till after. This woman and her neighbors did nothing wrong, they may even have saved a childs life. After the initial tussle, he could have taken his high self elsewhere and tried it again on another child.
Way to go Mom!!   Loser boy needs to get voted off the island and into prison for the rest of his miserable, mushroom filled life.
I LOVE this story!
Anyone else notice that it looks like a scene from the 1970s?
charge the mother for not kicking his ars even more!
It's amazing what the natural mothering instinct can make you do. A long time ago, when my son was 3, a group of teenagers pelted him with dirty snow in the front yard. Without thinking first, I jumped in the car and chased them down the street. I did not make physical contact with them, but I threatened them with an empty bottle out of anger. The look of fear on their faces was priceless, I am sure it kept them from picking on small children again.

@gunnutz Too bad no one had one convenient... then no one would have to worry about this particular POS ever again... instead, it's only a matter of time.
@gunnutz Well you can't even purchase one anymore nor can you purchase the ammo. There is a nationwide ammo shortage because our government stocked up 1.6 billion bullets.
Â
Also, just so you know, you don't need a gun to defend yourself from someone high on mushrooms.
 @gunnutzÂ
He is till here. An AR15 would have prevented that.
@gunnutz "hit him with a 2x4 and I broke that over him and he took off again,"
Â
The 2x4 didn't stop the guy! And they're lucky he didn't turn and fight. Being on drugs like that, it would have gotten really ugly for all the good citizens involved, probably for the guy on drugs too, but he clearly wasn't going to know about it until much later.

 @gunnutzÂ
Shows what you know about guns. There are no current modern firearms that take a clip.
@gunnutz cool, you continue to show everybody you don't know what your talking about.........you sure showed us.
I just stepped on his face! IÂ We need about 200 of her on the Gang task force.
"Y'all don' mess wit MAMA! She gonna kick yo' backside so hard it gonna be yo' frontside!"
Â
YAY MOM!!!Way to go!!!
Mom, the neighbors, and an improvised weapon. Cheers to that woman and her community! (They need to stop bragging about how face-stomping mad they were once they caught him if they don't want to lose everything they have in a civil lawsuit. Might wanna lock that up.)
He will get 7.5 years (measure 11 minimum) if convicted on the kidnapping charge alone.
Go Mama bear!!!
Amazing mama!
I'm loving it. Way to go mom and Xavieria. You are an inspiration.Â
My only regret, is that the perp is still alive.
It's nice to here a story turn out good like this, their are so many stories about this crap and the parents arn't paying attention. Good Job Mom
I love this woman. She put down a a-s-s woopin that punk will never forget! Xavieria, you should be proud of your mom AND yourself for making enough noise to be heard. You and your mom are an inspiration to a lot of people, and so are your neighbors. As a side note, can you imagine going through all that while high on zoomers? DAMN!
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com As a side note, can you imagine the first guy wanting to date Xaxieria?!? ;)  Better hope mama likes him!
Fat, drunk and high on mushrooms is no way to go through life son. I would love to see the video of that beat down...
Way to go mom. Who needs a gun when you have an angry mom and a 2x4.
@ormom If there had been two abductors they'd have probably gotten the child.
@Playanekes  @ormom Irrelevant...if they had 5 abductors they could have taken even more....duh.Â
