GRESHAM, Ore. – One man died and a second man was injured in a shooting at Red Sunset Park Friday night, according to the Gresham Police Department.

A man was found dead near the basketball courts. Police said they received a call about a body at about 9:45 p.m. Neighbors said they heard two "pops" around 9 p.m. and then two more several minutes later. They thought they were fireworks.

"Next thing I know there's cop cars coming in left and right in here," said neighbor Rose Niswander. "I'm like, 'OK that's not fireworks.'"

Paulino "Paul" Venancio-Lopez, 33, of Gresham was killed, police said.

Police said 22-year-old Omar Merino-Lopez, who had been shot in the leg, walked to Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center about six blocks away. Merino-Lopez has ties to East County, according to police.

Lt. Claudio Grandjean said the shooting was "possibly gang-related." Police haven't confirmed if the victims know each other.

Neighbor Pablo Garzon said he considers the park his back yard. His kids grew up playing there.

"We need to take care now, because it's not safe," he said.
