Police: Kidnapping story was a hoax; woman arrested

SALEM, Ore. -- Salem police and Marion County sheriff's deputies found and arrested a woman who they said made up a story about being held against her will.
Police said on Saturday night, 28-year-old Roxanna Long called her family and told them she was being held inside of a building. Family members told police that the line was disconnected before she could tell them where she was.
It's unclear why Long made up the story.
On Sunday morning the Salem Police Department asked the public for help finding Long.
Salem Police Lt. Dave Okada said authorities searched for Long along Brooklake Road NE between Wheatland Road and Interstate 5 early Sunday afternoon. They did not find her at the time, but deputies found her staying with an acquaintance in the area at around 4:30 p.m., Okada said.
Police arrested Long on charges of disorderly conduct and initiating a false report. Long also had an outstanding warrant for a hit-and-run crash in Yreka, Calif.
Long's former landlord, Lynch Prater, told KATU News that she disappeared while he was evicting her in 2011.
"She disappeared for like three days while we were evicting her, we had no idea where she went," said Prater, who also said he witnessed her arguing with others around the apartment.
KATU's Patrick Preston contributed to this story.
...and the gun advocates would have no problem arming this person...
Let's say it all is the truth. Â She was held against her will and by morning she was friends. Â Sounds to me like a "No, No, No" turned into a "Yes, Yes, Yes"
She had me at the bj stud !
@sargerator woo hoo!
The pin in the chin is always a clue !
Bill her for all costs associated with the report. Then please ship her back to CA. She will be out in less than 5 days if convicted down there.
Issues, much?
Isn't it just way easier and legal to admit cheating on your boyfriend or husband than making up a kidnapped story?
I wonder what her exit strategy was going to be when she suddenly "escaped"? Would she have reported to the adulation of the crowd and media that she suddenly clicked her heels together and suddenly found herself free? LOLÂ
In Arizona undocumented immigrants are often charged with human trafficking... themselves. If they can traffic themselves she can surely kidnap herself! Oregon also used to have a law that made attempted suicide an attempted murder! Oh, Government, protect us from ourselves!
BTW she did not "initiate false police report"; her family did in over-reaction.
@sarahmorrigan " BTW she did not "initiate false police report"; her family did in over-reaction.  (from your post)
True; however, her family would not have made that report if she had not called them, claiming that she had been kidnapped, etc. Â Apparently, her call seemed credible enough to the family to warrant action on their part... IOW, Ms Long started it...
Yikes!

@TheUglyTruth Probably didn't vote.
@TheUglyTruth She undoubtedly voted for Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann.
@Mikey ......wow, faking a kidnapping evokes a political response?
Ya got way too much time on your hands, Mikey !
Ah, you did read what he responded too ? a rightwingnutjob that happened to, how would you put it, "evoke political response"...keep up the good work rob !

Ya cause dimwit no experience palin ran as vice on a ticket because she didn't feel "entitled" to anything HA ! Oh and a mention of bachmann receiving almost 300K the prior year of her nutbag candidacy in farm subsidies, that isn't an entitlement, ya right, the clueless rightwingnutjobs are out again !Â
Mandatory mental health evaluation and follow-through with therapy and medication.Â
Anything "mandatory" outside of a custody setting is sheer fantasy!
We all agree...wrong on so many levels...so what now?  "The girl who cried wolf." and it's damned irritating but SPD has no chioice but to waste taxpayers money to check it out. Could have taken a lot longer so cheers to SPD. The comments are entertaining but why not get creative with some ideas for how to deal with this crap in a way that forces them to suffer consequences with the least  amount of expense to everyone else. 1 idea: Adequate volunteers to supervise so they can do community service..? No jail...the real punishment is forcing them to go home and face the music there.Â
@1Believer I like how you think. How about this: The next time an adult goes missing like this, the punishee has to sit down with the phone book and call every bar, hospital, liquor store and motel in a 100 mile radius.
And wear a lampshade while doing it!
@oodathunked We don't want to here what you do on the weekend for fun..K
I'm guessing she was like this as a child too.
What a colossal waste of time and resources that could've been used to help real people in need. I hope they bill her for the time and cost. I hope she gets whatever help she obviously needs.Â
Wow, 36 people reading this story @ 02:35 good going KATU.
@PeterAWolf  It's probably a random number generator, or the number of people reading the entire site. Nothing to get excited about.Â
Besides, counters went away a long time ago on the Internet, except for people just learning how to make a web page.
@PeterAWolf Yeah, pretty sure it's a fake counter. Try refreshing the page really quickly and you'll see what I mean.
@JohnQ.Public @PeterAWolf Yea, I'm up very early for work.
Gee, another woman that's narcissistic , self centered and bends the truth to attract attention to herself ? I'm shocked! Round up the usual suspects!Â
There was the case a few summers ago of a woman who claimed that she was raped in the trash enclosure of Hogan plaza & she had actually had sex with some random guy she had met on the internet. She felt guilty and thought her husband would find out.
There was also the woman that claimed she was assaulted hiking in the George which caused a large Police response. She later recanted her story.
And every spring (when the hormones are up) there is a series of young girls claiming to have been abducted, assaulted, etc.
I'm not saying that this doesn't happen but we need to stop the fake reports. Â
@PeterAWolf  If sufficient punishment were handed down, and that was publicized, then the other wanna be/already are idiots, might think thice. Hey, that might just work with many other criminal wanna bes as well.
Oops! You fail at being a normal person. Oops! Uh, oh... you're officially messed up and all your fellow human beings know it. Lol, oops! Whoopsie-daisy, you serve no beneficial purpose to the human race. Whoops!
She has an uncle by the name of Fester, I wonder what happens when she puts a light bulb in her ear.
This one might as well have called the police and turned herself in.. How stupid can you get..
CALLED IT!! The second I saw her face I knew it was bs!!
Hope she gets the help she's seeking after.
I knew it! just didn`t smell right.
On top of that she threw acid in her own face...oh wait that was another fruitcake. But she still looks like she's got acid face. Loser, hope California keeps you. H & R jerks keep injuring and murdering good people. I've stated before that hit and run jerks need the death penalty.
It is salem Do not they have one of the original government housing projects for people?
Anybody think the wealthy state of California will pay to bring her back for trial on a hit and run
When I am out of sick days I dip into my kidnapped days
Saw that coming a mile away.
Shocking development.
Well, well, Well, what a waste of police time and effort. I hope that they fry her big time.
@lee986321Â ~ Â I don't think they need to "fry" her, Lee... just present her with a bill for the police time and expenses... (not that she'll ever pay it, but it's worth a try anyway)...Â
@lee986321 I don't think qualifies as a capital offense, lee, but thanks for trying to post something.
She sure looks older than her stated age!!Â
@Oh My METH.
@Valerie Richardson @Oh My I would think more of a drinking problem than meth
@Valerie Richardson @Oh My At 200 pounds she holds her meth well
