Hillsboro police shoot, injure man with knife
HILLSBORO, Ore. - Hillsboro Police opened fire on a man with a knife late Thursday night following a domestic dispute they said resulted in a stabbing.
Officers said they responded to a domestic violence call in the 2000 block of NE Barberry Drive at 11:30 p.m. Thursday. The incident took place at the Sedona Park apartment complex.
When they arrived, police said they learned the man had assaulted his live-in girlfriend. A man living in a nearby apartment went to her aid and was stabbed by the suspect with a folding knife, investigators said.
Hillsboro Police said two officers confronted 29-year-old Gilberto Rafael Perez, who was still armed with a knife in his apartment, and ordered him to drop the weapon. When he refused, an officer used a Taser on Perez but it "was not effective in stopping him."
After telling Perez a second time to drop the knife, police said he continued to advance on the officers while holding the weapon. An officer then shot Perez twice.
Perez was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for surgery and police said he is expected to survive.
Police said the neighbor who was stabbed went to a hospital for treatment and has since been released. There were no details on injuries to the woman involved.
The offices involved were not injured. Police identified the officers as David Bergstrom, 44, and Brian Wilber, 37. Officer Wilber fired his Taser and Officer Bergstrom shot Perez, police said.
Both officers are on paid administrative leave per normal police procedures.
The Washington County Major Crimes Team is investigating the incident.

Being a hunter for most of my life; I can expertly say that "1 shot to the head will drop a 1300 lb animal like a rock!". So, 1 drug crazed idiot would be no problem. I would whole heartedly volunteer to teach the Hillsboro police officers how to shoot! Bye the way, the man who went to the woman's rescue is my son and being his MOTHER makes me the proudest woman on earth!
I hope your kid will recover quickly, and you are right to be proud. It is nice to see some people still have the balls to stand up and fight for what they believe is right.
@Hunter1 you insult the Hillsboro police officers, lady. No animal you ever killed was brandishing a knife in close quarters at night surrounded by family residences and seeking to harm you or others. Why don't you just walk on down to the Hillsboro Police Department with your hunter's safety merit badge or whatever and tell it to them in person rather than insulting them on the Internet?
you sound as drug crazed as the idiot that stabbed my son!

Was the breakroom was damaged?Â
Â
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess the victim was under the influence of something? Either that, or incapable of evaluative skills.... or, a combination of both.Â

*insert joke about bringing a knife to a gun fight*
@MarkKpic I was going to do the joke about bringing a knife to a gun fight but instead went to laughing at the cops for not being able to shoot straight. It was a toss up.
@scared_citizen  @MarkKpic Well, especially in the PMA, law enforcement is 'damned if they do, damned if they dont'.Â
Â
If they had killed him, the Mr Graves and the rest of the media would be interviewing all his relatives, and posting stories about how the 'trigger happy police' shot a 'kind and wonderful man' who was 'just in a bad place'. Then the ambulance chasers would file a wrongful death lawsuit that would undoubtedly result in a couple million being paid to the family because the police shot and killed this pillar of the community.Â
@Playanekes  Already been there, done that, have the souvenier spoon to prove it.
@MarkKpic @scared_citizen yep, and if the cop doesn't kill the guy, expert hunters and armchair snipers out here are going to chastise his shooting skills. Talk is awful cheap.
"Hillsboro police shoot, injure man with knife" sure reads much better than the rest of them that have been so common lately.
"When he refused, an officer used a Taser on the man but it "was not effective in stopping him."
Â
Amazing how those drugs don't give a crap about bean bags, tazers, and pepper spray. Â If a person has a knife and is acting in a threatening manner, you shoot him. Â Period.
Â
Sounds like the Hillsboro Police need to spend some more time at the practice range. The cop shot TWICE and wasnt able to kill him.Â
@scared_citizen sounds to me like you weren't there, have no Idea what you're talking about or what the circumstances were, haven't been in so much as a paintball firefight, and probably fancy yourself to be some kind of expert pistol-ninja.
@Playanekes  It was sarcasm.  If you pulled your head out of your backside, maybe you might recognize it next time.
Sounds to me like that was the intent so I would say he was a pretty damn good shot to stop him and spare the guys life. Which is not an easy thing to do. People don't realize that getting shot isn't like it is on TV. A shot in the leg could easily kill you.
@mike  Thanks. It really was just a sarcastic comment. I am glad the man survived. Who knows why he did what he did. Maybe he can get some help for it now.
