City of Amity issues 'boil water notice' after water line break

AMITY, Ore. – The City of Amity lost water service after a line broke between the city and a nearby reservoir.

Repair crews are working to fix the broken line. Water service is expected to be back later Wednesday afternoon.

When service returns, residents should boil water to kill potentially harmful bacteria that could be in the water supply, city administrator Larry Layton said.

The boil water notice is expected to last 24 hours, Layton said.

The loss of water service affected everyone within the Amity Water System, which covers about 600 homes and businesses.

Residents should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, washing dishes or making ice until the boil water notice is lifted. The water needs to boil for at least one minute to kill harmful bacteria.

The Amity School district sent students home at 11:30 a.m. because of the broken water line.
