Hundreds march on Occupy Portland anniversary
PORTLAND, Ore. – Hundreds of protesters marched through Portland Saturday marking the one-year anniversary of Occupy Portland’s march through downtown.
On Oct. 6, 2011, thousands of protesters marched against bank bailouts and economic imbalance. They followed the march by camping in downtown parks for over a month.
Saturday, however, protesters marched for several different reasons. Many marchers told KATU News they were protesting the war in Afghanistan.
“I’m just totally opposed to the wars and American foreign policy in general,” one protester said.
In addition to the Occupy anniversary, Saturday also marked the 11th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan.
“Maybe economics is the root of it,” said another protester. “You can also say environmental issues, women’s issues, gay rights issues. They’re all interconnected. They all deal with justice and inequality.”
Police said the march went smoothly.
that vary night occupy Portland was threatened by homeland security secret police with electric shock and impact weapons www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydGc7âL4PE8M.
Did they pass out Obama phones to celebrate?
I heard that conservatives are holding a counter protest. Â Their goal is "Longer hours for less pay."
@Daniel C 0 hours multiplied by any number is still 0;-) And you don't expect anyone to pay for 0 hours of work?!?
They're back. Groan.
These people make me proud, they are real Americans.
@!!! yes in the world of BO they are Americans.
They don't work, they cost the public a great deal of money, they make a mess wherever they go, and they want to destroy capitalism in favor of socialism.
Â
Yes that's the BO vision for America hope and change and don't ask what that change is even when the government tells you what to do for work and that you should be paid the same as the ditch digger.
Â
What's going to happen to all of these lazy nonworking parasites when the rich have been taxed into nonexistence. oh that's right will just lower the level of middle-class until were all have the same income regardless of whether you work or not. I can see that working....NOT !!!
Maybe they can all go to D.C. and give 0bama some tips on how to win the next debate. They did it for Biden, can't wait until next Thursday to see that one.
Oh yea? Must be making some Crappy beer in the basement of that Catlik church across the way of Stienmart where 'PeeWee' da people lounge about basking in the sun and getting fat on their daily meal. WANT SOME GRAVY W' THAT MEAT_LOAF?
@Dee Hue WTF are you talking about?!?
Is that Cosmo Kramer marching on the left side of the headline photo?
@whirledworld No that's your Mom LOL!
Do something constructive. Go down to Silicon Valley and picket the Apple HQ to demand they move a portion of their manufacturing to USA, for example.
fantastic waste of time and energy for the marchers and their photographers and reporters
"Saturday, however, protesters marched for several different reasons."
Â
I should have joined them - Â be a protestor too ! -- Sick of these HIGH Gas Prices !!
"Occupy Portland, not Afghanistan" -- um, okay. Ya know what helps a movement achieve success? Having a consistent message and clear goals. These people can't even remember what they're protesting, so how the hell do they think they're ever going to change anything? At least they didn't assault anyone or destroy property this time.
 @badcatÂ
Â
I think you just hit on why many of their lives are a mess and they feel the need to blame others.
"Police said the march went smoothly."
Â
So this time the group went about their protest the right way, perhaps got the right permits, did not damage public or private property. That is good to see.
Â
Get a job
I'm still trying to figure out what occupy stands for.
 @RalphCramdenÂ
Â
Take up space, use valuable oxygen.
 @Scotty9Â
For sure. And produce a lot of needless CO2 when they talk about nothing.
@RalphCramden When you figure that out -- LET them know!
@RalphCramden Aren't we all. Hard to think it is corporate America when they protest while drinking Starbucks latte's, talking on their cell phones and wearing Abercrombie shirts.
Jason M. Glover Jason M. Glover ... when they start costing our community unnecessary hard-ships then I don't care what their problems, backgrounds, health, outlook, whatever is...if they need something and I can help then I will...but to use my tax money to tear up the parks, harass the police, break the windows of the banks, litter the public streets, parks, etc. is more than I can or want to deal with....if they are as bad off as you suggest then get off the streets and go to those organizations that offer help....I've had enough of this nonsense.
I was protesting the Columbus Day holiday. I think it should be a whole week.
One whole year and they have what to show for it! How stupid can people be?
Children of Marx march for something that history has already proven to be unsustainable.
I spent some time chatting with Occupy people and I came to the conclusion that they are anti-establishment across the board. My older brother was also involved with the movement before they turned into a strictly anarchist street warrior fest and he was never a fan of Obama.Anti-Obama sentiment is a definate theme. http://www.buzzfeed.com/gavon/18-anti-obama-signs-from-occupy-wall-street
@noneofyourbizzness Is 'street warrior' a new name for themselves? I'd think 'warrior' is a tittle held in a much higher regard, and deserves to represent a far better clientele.Â
@last boyscout  @noneofyourbizzness I am thinking more like street vermon....
Â
anarchist are borderline terrorist and in the past some of their acts like firebombing car dealerships in Eugene make that case...
Â
remember the car they pulled over in salem of guys coming to the occupy march and they had homemade bombs and other materials....It was link to an anarchist group...
Â
Â
The anarchist hijacked a movement that lacked any focus while leaders were stoned all the time, and then made it about their game of chaos
Â
Â
@Duvie23  @last boyscout  @noneofyourbizzness Well you have to remember about the firebombings it could be something like this

Hmmm and which "protesters" were the ones threatening the cops with the rocks .......lets take a look at the raw video

Â
Problem, reaction, solution.....kind of also reminds me of this too....I am sure they were all just "honest" mistakes....

Â
I wonder if any two of them actually protest the same thing? Anarchists are generally against everything anyway, except themselves!
Johnny's in the basement mixing up the medicine /  I'm on the pavement thinking about the government  / The man in the trench coat, badge out, laid off......etc....etc....
It's all been done before guys. Only it wasn't just for the television cameras.
Come on.... take it to the capital... can't even get a protest done right..... just a bunch of sheep milling around the general public.
If a republican was in office, his name would be on every sign they drag around. But since one of their own sits in the [empty] chair, they just ignore that little detail.
@last boyscout You are generally right.....The protest for the wars came to a complete stop even though 4 years later we actually ramped up the war in Afghanistan....
Â
They generally are still against the war, but they dont want to make their guy look bad...
@last boyscout Actually, someone has a sign that said: Obama, Assassin in Chief.
Good to see Kramer made it to this show. They're all just mad because Obama didn't turn out to be the man of their dreams after all.
@last boyscout What Obama isn't going to fix things? Well at least I get a shiny new cell phone! PHEW
They are wasting their time....go home and get a job.
@sortbait says the person wasting their time hanging out online telling people they've never met or spoken with to "get a job," like that somehow is a meaningful statement.
@Jason M. Glover  @sortbait Well you may not be able to say that for certain about these protestors today, but I am sure if hundreds can camp in parks for 30 days straight I am pretty sure they didn't have jobs...
Â
Most of these peoples injustices are caused by their own actions...smoking dope and doing drugs makes you unemployable....Most of those people choose to live like filth...
@Jason M. Glover  @Duvie23  @sortbait They got slammed because their camp destroyed public property and bred dens of iniquity and vermin.
@Jason M. Glover  @Duvie23  @sortbait Jason M. I hardly think that if someone chooses to take drugs, and become addicted that they would be classified as having"a disease". Drug addiction unless being forced onto someone is a choice. The addict can blame nobody but themselves for their predicament.
Because a person came from a lousy background doesn't mean they are being denied opportunities. There are opportunities to better yourself everywhere... you just have to have the ambition to seize them. If you decide to live off of the good will of others then you should not be surprised when someone calls you a bum.
Life is only as complicated as you make it. Use your brain, and some elbow grease and things will fall together. There is no reason to blame other people for the fact that you are just lazy.
@Duvie23  @sortbait The people you are describing simply were never "most of the protesters." Most of those individuals just came for the free food (and good for them, they needed the food). They were however exclusively focused on by the media in a calculated attempt to give you that impression. Do lazy people exist, and will they also exist at most protests? Sure. But also don't forget some of these people you write off as lazy may not have had the same opportunities in life as you have had, or good parental role models. Life is complicated, drug addiction is a disease and those people need help. Don't be so fast to write off other people's problems as invalid. Most people I meet who are hard on their luck financially, most of what has happened to them is entirely out of their control. People can't help getting sick, being mentally ill, or injured, or laid off if their company ships jobs overseas. I am not denying that there also exist complete moochers, all I am saying is don't be so quick to just generalize and label everyone who is poor that way. Especially the homeless. Compassion is what we should be offering them, not venom. Conservatives say all the time that, rather than relying on Government, we as communities should take care of the poor with voluntary charitable giving. That's exactly what Occupy was doing with its camp, and they got slammed for it.
