Jewelry thieves hold homeowner at gunpoint in Portland
Police said two men held Jerry Dunken at gunpoint as they stole jewelry from his SE Portland home.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Two men armed with a handgun held a homeowner at gunpoint as they ransacked his house in Southeast Portland on Thursday afternoon.

The armed robbery happened around 1:45 p.m. at a house near SE 72nd Avenue and Burnside. Two men, one of whom had the handgun, approached Jerry Dunken as he worked in his garage, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Dunken told police the suspects demanded jewelry. The armed suspect stayed with Dunken as the second suspect went upstairs and rummaged through the house, police said.

“I couldn’t decide if he was aiming at head or chest or what, but he just stayed there with it and as asking stuff and asking the other guy if he was through,” Dunken said. “He said ‘don’t touch anything or I’ll shoot you.’”

The suspects found some jewelry in the house then walked away into the neighborhood, Simpson said. Dunken was not injured.

Several officers and a police dog searched the area but did not find the suspects. Dunken said someone found his smashed cell phone in the street nearby.

Police offered the following descriptions of the men:

  • Suspect 1: A Hispanic man in his 30s with a stocky build. He was wearing dark clothes and was armed with a handgun.
  • Suspect 2: A tall, white man with a pockmarked face. He was wearing a red sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the case should call investigators at (503) 823-0405.
