Jail inmate escapes while taking out the trash
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) — A man has escaped from the Klamath County Jail in Klamath Falls while taking out the garbage.
Sheriff Tim Evinger tells The Herald and News newspaper the Thursday morning escape is the first since 1989.
Evinger says a helicopter has joined the search of the area around the jail.
Evinger says 25-year-old Kenneth Robert Banes was being escorted into the jail yard to dump garbage as part of a work detail when he somehow got under or over a fence.
Banes was sentenced to three years in prison for a number of vehicle thefts and burglaries. He was in the county jail for violating his parole.

I think I saw this in a Mentalist episode
Trash taking out the trash, how ironic. No to happy about the escaping part.
The guard maybe was dreaming about getting back to the break room before all the doughnuts were gone. Funny how a box of doughnuts can cause ones mind to slip.
@swimbad It's usually microwave popcorn.... followed by..... whining to food workers about not getting their on-the-job free meal! The IQ of these guards is extremely low.... most drawn to the job... enjoy hurting others.... drink too much.... smoke pot etc..... break the law etc.
Sounds like this guy was in county jail for a parole sanction. If he was sentenced to 3 years in prison, he might have been in county jail as a state corrections local option prisoner. Hopefully this time if he's caught he will be in state corrections custody where he belonged in the first place.
Doesn't really sound like he was "escorted" very well.
shoot on site!!!!

I am guessing the guard is going to have some explaining to do and it probably won't go well.
Time to find a better Escort Service!
Were the guards looking elsewhere?
Here's a young man that was paying the price for bad choices and he's now just added a great deal of more grief to his life through yet another bad choice.
A helicopter is involved? Geez. This is a minor criminal. Let him go. Police will pick him up sooner or later and he will be charged with escape.
Â
Prisons need to be in the middle of nowhere. Like in the middle of a dried up alkali lake in eastern Oregon. If they escape they have to walk 10 miles without water or food in the hot sun and no shade. If they make it to a road there won't be any cars on it for days.
@RalphCramden The cops love to bring out the "big guns." That helicopter is only costing $500 to $1000 per hour to operate and I am sure Klamath County is just flush with cash. It does look silly though if you spend that kind of money without bearing any fruit for a minor criminal who poses little danger to society.

It would be interesting to know what kind of helicopter they are using. The only helicopter they could get for $500-1000 per hour would be a Robinson R44. Any other helicopter would cost at least $1200-3000 per hour.
Â
Total waste of money in my opinion.
@RalphCramden Agreed
Or a retired oil tanker anchored a few miles off the coast.
I guess he violated his incarceration now.
