Lake Oswego fire destroys deck, building and about a dozen kayaks

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – A fire in a Lake Oswego storage building Tuesday morning did about $40,000 in damage before crews could put it out.

According to Fire Marshal Gert Zoutendijk, somebody called 911 at 1:05 a.m. after noticing flames across Westlake Bay at 602 Cabana Lane.

By the time crews arrived, they found a storage building on top of a deck built over the bay that was fully engulfed.

Firefighters put it out, but the damage was done – about 12 kayaks were destroyed, as well as much of the deck and storage building at the Lakewood Bay Community Club.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined. Investigators said they cannot rule out oily staining equipment left on the deck by workers who were staining it as a potential cause.

There was about $25,000 in structural damage and $15,000 in property damage.
