KIHEI, Hawaii - A 61-year-old Lake Oswego man suffered a shark attack Friday morning as he was snorkeling off the shore of Maui.
Authorities said the man, not yet identified, was snorkeling about 250 yards from the shore of Kihei, Hawaii, when a 10-foot shark bit his left calf. The attack occurred at about 9:30 a.m., Hawaiian Standard Time.
The man then got up on his paddle board and was whisked to shore by family members and some local canoe club members, according to a news release from the Maui Police Department.
The man, who sustained a deep leg laceration but still remained conscious, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center. His name and condition weren’t immediately available Friday afternoon.
Maui County Ocean Safety were alerted to the attack and responded to close the beaches and monitor the area.
