'I don't understand why this would happen'
ST. HELENS, Ore. - A 21-year-old man suspected of shooting his mother was taken into custody Sunday night following a long standoff in St. Helens.
The incident began around 5 p.m. and was centered in the area of Railroad Avenue and Old Portland Road.
The woman who was shot was taken to the hospital and her son, the person suspected of firing on her, then barricaded himself inside the family's home, police said.
SERT officers responded and several hours later took him into custody without incident. He has been identified as Robert Terry. His mother's name is Dana Terry.
Those close to Terry said he is best friends with his mom and they were shocked to hear what was happening at the home.
"They were awesome together," said Holly McCartney, a friend of the suspect. "He's an amazing guy. He's a mama's boy. I don't understand why this would happen. There is not one thing I would ever change about Robert."
Neighbors, however, told a somewhat different story. Although they said they had never seen police outside the home before, they described Terry as a troublemaker who partied and often sped down the rural road near his home.
"My daughter chased him down and said 'slow down, we have kids in the neighborhood' and he said 'we don't care about your kids,' " said neighbor Bev Lundy.
Another friend of the suspect told us that Robert Terry does tend to get depressed and that he had been texting her that he needed someone to talk to.
We also learned that Dana Terry was named her son's conservator when he was 15 years old. Usually that's for an inheritance or mental health issues, although we do not know why it was done in this case.
Sheriff Jeff Dickerson with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said at this point they have no idea what might have been a motive for the shooting. Terry has no criminal background.
Dana Terry was originally in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition. She was shot once in the stomach.
Thank you everyone for reminding me how rude and disrespectful people can be. Im not to worried though theres a four letter word where you guys will go and its not jail. It turns out it was an accident , imagine that. Hope you rot where you guys are going..... and to all who were raised right with faith and respect, thank you. I know shooting your own mother looks bad, but all Roberts and Danas loved ones need support more than ever, thank again. Â
I was a man at 17 had a job my own car I was a latch key kid from about 12 years of age. Hurt Your Mom eh boy? Get the dunce cap out somebody gonna spend the next few years looking at the corner.
It's amazing the conclusions that are jumped to and the judgements that are leveled with so little information. And compassion takes a back seat. A sad commentary on what this web site has become.
This could just be reduced levels of oxytocin ( nine chain amino acid) that creates empathy. Mothers release it and babies get when head goes through birth canal and squeezes the brain stem where it is released. If he was cesarean birth and no labor began, he is high on list for low oxytocin levels.
His booking photo makes me understand at a glance that he "ain't right in the head". I hope the Mom survives and he gets locked up, key thrown away.Â
what a bunch of moronic posts, spinning the 21 year old MAN (he's not a kid just cause he's such a loser he still lives with his mom at 21) into the victim, poor "kid".  well I'm sure glad he's not going to be driving up and down our road  like a stupid idiot anymore!
@arnold
dont know u man but i was a good friend of this klown and 2 hours before all this shooting happened guess where he was??? inside my house stealing all my stuff and not just mine apparently they got a few more houses as well, I used to feel the same way that Holly chick did and I know Robert better than Prolly anyone of u guys except Holly and nothing i wouldnt have done for him or Dana (mother) but sadly im unpleased with getting a ton of stuff stolen so you can add Burglery to his charges as well Dana is at home now recovering doing a lot better.
Â
Arnold as for you sorry to hear that man I never speeded down your road never realized honestly Robert did either he didnt have a license so he rarely drove must have been some good old fashioned crackheads visiting planning there next burglery and shooting
"unless you were there... all we know..."  All we know  is that this obvious little punk drives like an idiot, is rude to his neighbors, and shoots his mom in the gut twice...  but wow, they were sure great together... jeez, i wonder what he does for her on Mother's Day... maybe a stabbing? or just some good-natured punches to the face?  ...
@arnold You have no idea what you are talking about .. .. and have no idea what happened. He is 21 and drove to fast down a street, which makes you believe him shooting his mom on purpose. When  you find out this was all an accident I hope you feel like crap for all the friends and family you are being disrespectful too. When you have a devastating time in your life I hope no one is there for you and everyone turns against you... maybe then you'll know a little piece of how everyone of his and her love ones are going threw now.
@arnoldSo should we the public base our entire perception of you off a few lines in the comment section of a news story?  Like what you're doing to this 21yr old.....
Â
@wren feel free, I'm not the pos that shot his mom,.
@arnold They are now reporting it could have been an accident. Not knowing all the facts you call this guy out as a pos due to his poor motor vehicle habits. Nice.Â
@JJ nope, I just happen to have a brain. you're related to this "waste of space and oxygen" aren't you? hahaha... and you're right, since somethings on the internet aren't true, everything must be.
@arnold But if someone else types a couple of lines about you on the internet, they must be true. So that being said, you are now 21, live at home, and drive like an idiot according to your neighbor who is highly reliable because I talked to them once ever and didn't do any research or background checking on whether or not they are even mentally stable.
Just keep in mind people, unless you were actually there to witness it you don't know what really happened. It's all up to the interpretation of others. The news will document it one way to put their spin on it (He drives fast down a rural road... yeah, and he's 21 so wow...shocker.) The police will come in not knowing anything about this family and put their own spin on it based on how they desire the incident to be perceived. Those involved don't exactly get to proof read any of this for errors before published. All we know is a mother was shot and her son didn't come out for the police. It's very unfortunate.
Guns, guns, guns, guns, guns, guns, guns... More guns please.
Depression isn't an excusable defense for shooting your mom, self or anyone else. (shameful)
What an incredibly sad news story. Once this young man realizes the seriousness of his actions, he will never be the same again. Sounds like his mother was his support and his friend, but something obviously went horribly wrong. I hope his mother recovers and they both get the help they need to fix the problems that caused this to happen in the first place.
Seriously people, Have respect for the family and friends of his and his mothers and don't post inconsiderate posts. You don't know what happened or why he shot his mother therefore do not come to the conclusion that he is psycho or on meth.
 @RealTalk2012 Thank you!

@arnold uh, duh, news reporters always have all the facts the first time and never misinform or make mistakes. Therefore we know that he is guilty without doing any research or letting him have his due process.
@JJ hahaha, you're right, it's a big conspiracy theory... if he's not guilty, I'll apologize to him personally, but then again, i guess we'll never know, since you obviously take the concept of "you weren't there" to a new level of political correctness and stupidity.
Another kid's BRAIN FRIED by state Psycho-Wacko meds.....
Right on 1812. i agree.
"They were awesome together," said Holly McCartney, a friend of the suspect. "He's an amazing guy. He's a mama's boy. I don't understand why this would happen. There is not one thing I would ever change about Robert."

Yep, sounds like a keeper alright. Don't change anything ... except for his trigger finger, his lead foot, and his attitude. Maybe a decade or two in the Pen will teach him not to shoot mama anymore.
@I812 You sound like a keeper yourself .... your bad attitude and disrespect. I could keep going knowing more facts about you just from your post then you'll ever know about the kid who accidently shot his mom. So go ahead and keep being disrespectful to his and her loved ones I don't think they are going threw enough!!
@I812 Yep, keep reading the facts. Oh wait, those aren't facts...they're just opinions of a third party that may not be reliable. But that shouldn't really matter as long as you can draw conclusions about a person based on random claims. Never mind that there may be more than one side to a story.
Who shoots thier own mother? I hope the police can find out why.
