Man arrested for tight-rope walking on Steel Bridge, police say

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police arrested a man who was tight-rope walking on the cables of the Steel Bridge on Saturday morning.

Benjamin Nathan Lovitz, 21, was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct and first-degree criminal trespass.

Police were called to bridge by people who were afraid he was considering jumping. Instead, he was walking the wires between the bridge’s two tallest towers.

Police and firefighters climbed to the upper deck to see what he was intending to do. They also brought in rescue boats in case he jumped or fell off, and the bridge tender shut down the bridge so it couldn’t lift.

After about 10 minutes, he came down the stairs and was immediately arrested.
